We are interested in buying a property in the Cortijo Cabrera village complex but are finding information on it rather scarce.

We plan to live there 6-9 months of the year.

Are there many permanent/semi-permanent residents there or is it primarily a holiday let type resort?

What sort of facilities does it have in terms of bars, restaurants, shops etc.?

How far is it to Turre or Mojácar and how long does it take to travel by car?

Are the roads around there of a reasonable standard?

Can you get decent broadband there?

Would you recommend it as a good place to live for a semi-permanent resident? We’re both retired but still pretty active, still running, swimming, cycling etc.

We want a quiet life but would like to have closeish (walking) access to some facilities though recognise that more comprehensive facilities will require a drive.

Any information would be gratefully received!

I know the complex in Cabrera as my brother -in-law has a holiday home there but it's certainly  not somewhere where I would consider as a permanent home base despite the stunning scenery and sttractive, reasonably priced properties.

The complex is not close enough to services and certainly  not within walking distance.  The access road is awkward and  narrow and potentially dangerous.  We like to have a good walk every morning to stsrt the day but in Cabrera there are are no flat or semi flat walks becsuse it's  all mountain paths.  I suspect that few people choose to live in the Csbrera complex full time and most of the houses were empty when we were there.

I once had a hairdresser who moved from Mojacar beach after buying a besutiful villa in Cabrera, but the house was burgled soon after moving there even though he'd left his were  dogs inside, so I think you'd definitely need a burglar alarm living there.  A drive to Turre  takes about 15 to 20 minutes as you have to drive quite slowly on the narrow windy road, although it can't be more than about 5 or 6 kms in terms of distance.

I believe there is one very small shop in Cabrera and a couple of restaurants but I doubt that there is a fibre optic connection available up there but WiFi is certainly possible but not by landline.

Driving up to the Cabrera complex you pass by Cortijo Grande where there is a scattering of villas and a few attractive older-style apartments and a couple of bar/restaurants.  This area has better access but is still remote in terms of getting to anywhere  else on foot.

Hope this will help you get some idea of what by expect if you have thoughts of moving to this area.   There are many better alternatives herebfor living quietly in the countryside yet living an active retirement within easy reach of essential amenities.

Thanks for the information. That’s very helpful.

We’re looking at a number of properties in the area so will definitely bear your comments in mind…

Just don't forget the milk when you go shopping..... a round trip of 20 mins at least to get it! Why not look at Los Gallardos, especially Huerta Nueva. Then you can look at the Cabrera mountains instead of being in them? Easier for shops, restaurants etc...

Thanks for the reply.

Bit of a mixture of views on the Cabrera development!

Part of the attraction was the potential view from the villas there though a lot depends on how mountainous it really is?

We’re still pretty active so some hill walking won’t be a problem though the comments about the road there doesn’t fill me with optimism!

A common theme about property in Spain seems to be the extent of legal issues surrounding many developments!

The view looking ip towards the Cabrera development is certainly quite stunning.   Looking down  from Cabrera it is good enough - and you may see a bit of the sea depending on where you are looking from - but it's not exactly stunning as you are looking down on fairly flat countryside with a  scattering of rural houses, various power lines and a mountain rangea long way off in the distance. I think you have a better view when the Sierra Cabrera ls the scenic backdrop from certain points of Turre or Los Gallardos.

This is the view from my place in Cortijo Cabrera and I think it is pretty good...A lot of what others have said is true and I don't know if I could live here all year round but I just love the place. True, at the moment there isn't a shop but the drive may seem daunting at first if you are used to motorways, but if you know country roads anywhere then you very quickly will get used to the two roads into the village. Is it dangerous driving? Most people take their time and are polite in stopping for oncoming traffic, so I think its pretty safe. Just don't drink and drive!

Hello.

My wife and l first discovered cabrerra 20 years ago whilst on holiday. For years we couldn't get Cabrera out of our heads. We lived in Malaga for 5 years and have had a bolt hole in Ronda for 18 years. Having sampled different aspects of life in various areas in Andalucia we now live permanently in Cabrera. We love it. We love walking and we greatly value privacy and tranquility. We get all three in abundance. We can also pop out for a takeaway indian 10 minutes down the road in Turre. Whats not to like. Obviously do your own research, but we are over the moon with the move.

As others have already advised, definitely get a good lawyer who if familiar with first occupation licences etc.

Good luck

Thanks for the response.

We’re planning to come over in the next few weeks so will have a chance to see it in the flesh (so to speak).

Views seem to be mixed on the area with concerns expressed about the road to Turre and its relative remoteness though I’ve seen the road trip on YouTube and I don’t think it’s too bad. Have certainly travelled on worse!

Do you find the community there fairly friendly and vibrant? We like our privacy but I think some sort of local support network would be helpful.
