Hi Laura, Welcome to the forum. Your husband wants to work as an electrician or if necessary run a bar type business. In other words he is on a journey that might go pear shape and pretty quickly. He is not alone and could find himself in deeper water than he expected. If he is in employment in the UK, I would urge him to stay there and love, cherish and hold onto his position there.

Coastal Spain is not the answer to everything and it can be harrowing to try to make a living here. There is no point in being the best electrician around if nobody knows about it. Your husband might as well be a lighthouse in the Yorkshire Moors, brilliant but useless.

You didn't say anything about yourself and what you have to offer. Spain still has a relatively high unemployment rate especially in the 25 to 35 age group. So, unless you have terrific backing you could be onto quite a torrid time in Spain.

I would love to be wrong, but I have seen far too many people like you (on the information you have supplied) return to the UK in an almost undignified way.

Before you judge me I hope you can do the following:-

Write down a SWOT analysis of what the move to Spain will mean for you as follows:-

Strengths:-

Weaknesses:-

Threats:-

Opportunities:-

If your Strengths and Opportunities outweigh Weaknesses and Threats, then hop on the next plane; if not . . . . .

Laura , there isn't much more to say that Matthew hasn't covered very well.

As two retirees here it's only from the outside looking in that I can comment on, and work, decently paid work, is hard come by.

We have Spanish friends with university educated kids working as cleaners, English teachers ( for pittance) and in fruit packaging companies because they can't get work, even in bars or restaurants.

Nobody wants to ruin your dreams, just saying please go carefully and do an awful lot of clear precise groundwork.

Good luck to you in the future whatever you decide to do.

I would love to be able to tell you that Matthew and Jack are wrong, but I can't! Over 4000 bars have shut down across andalucia in the last 2 years so...and other work isn't easy to come by either.

Good luck in whatever you do!

Hi,

I made different experience in San Juan de los terreros , bar will be difficult yes ,but a good electrician , we had to search for about 1 and half year before getting one.

There are lots of elderly people around ,so if you could think of offering services and be a real honest it should work , friends of mine had been cleaning and she was always booked ,had to stop due to age and health .any people don't speak Spanish and can need help in every day live ,from cleaning ,small repairs, fixing little things in the homes ,to drive for shopping with them and so on. So it kind of depends what you can offer ,how genuine and honest you are. It will come in handy if you could speak a little German or French .

Maybe best to come over have a look for your self in some of the regular groups meeting in SJdlT or Aguilas, and after that you can decide for yourself , this area is different from Mojacar or Albox.

You will need Spanish Electrical qualifications I expect..! Opening and closings bars are a major feature of this coastline..!!! I saw a massive investment and a few months work go into refurbishing  a restaurant on Mojacar Playa last year.. Tortuga, Belgian/South American Fusion, right on the seafront.... it closed down within 3-4 months............ nuff said!!
