Hi, we are thinking of buying a holiday home in San Juan but have heard reports that in the winter months the resort shuts and there is not much to do or many bars and restaurants? We are holidaying in Roquetas de mar in July this year so will have a trip to San Juan but just wondered if people could let me know or share their thoughts and experience? We are not party animals and are looking to spend 2-3 months when we retire but we would like somewhere that has a few bars and restuarsnts to choose from and a nice feiendly town/village?

thanks in advance,

Ellen Simkiss

Yes Terreros is quieter in the winter months, which is really only 4 months. There are still places open and Aguilas is 10 kilometres away and plenty of choice there.

Hi,

thank you both, would you say in the summer months there are plenty of choice for bars and restaurants in Terreros?

Thank again,

Ellen

Hi, I'm just curious why your research so far has led you to San Juan? What is it that you're actually looking for?

If you have an all year Spanish culture in mind, close to the sea, with a selection of bars and restaurants with a good mix of Spanish/northern European clientele; could I be so bold as to suggest researching further along the coast? Villaricos is pleasant as is Palomares.

If you're interested in somewhere with a stronger northern European influence Turre, Los Gallardos and even Mojacar (Pueblo) are all active throughout the year and all are still unmistakably Spanish.

As a previous respondent (Jack) mentioned, going in the other direction, Aguilas is a great little Spanish town. It's not kiss-me-quick like Mojacar Playa (no offense intended) nor is it so seasonal, but is lively enough for the grandkids whilst genteel enough for the grandparents.

Something else that might be worth considering; by all means do your reconnaissance missions whilst you're over here in the summer, but don't expect anywhere to have quite the same 'vibe' in the winter. If you're looking for a winter escape then do your reconnaissance in the winter, if you're looking to kidnap the grandchildren for 6 weeks in the summer then focus on a summer resort.

Just a few thoughts to throw a spanner in the works. Hope you enjoy your final choice.

Jimbo

Hi, the idea being we wanted somewhere Spanish but still had the holiday vibe but a lot less built up than other Spanish resorts. We looked at a few properties on line and San Juan had lovely properties which were very affordable and also close to golf courses, which my Husband liked. I will take your suggestions on board and keep them in mind when we come over in July, thank for taking the time to reply and offer the sugestions,

best wishes,

Ellen

Hi Ellen
We travel out to San Juan every October & February (Plus summer months).
I'd say the season is May to September, simply because of the amount of Spanish the come out to the seaside.  It is a bit like Devon/Cornwall for the Spanish.
However, during the winter months even though quiet, you do tend to meet a lot more British simply because of the ratios.
We love it and do lots of exploring during winter months, then relax at pools and beaches in the summer.
