Hi

I am thinking of buying a property in the Oria area, and was wondering if anybody grows their own fruit and veg. Would appreciate any advice as to what is best to grow and what to avoid.

Regards

Chris

Hi Chris, are you thinking about growing veg as a business?

I have apple, pear and plum that grow well.  Also raspberries and blackberties.  Orange and lemon need to be protected from the wind and frost.  You need to protect your veg from the sun as it burns the leaves and because of the heat you need plenty of water.

When buying plants you need frost hardy.   If you buy around here you can see my plants to see what grows well.  I have a garden full of plants.

Hi Edna,

was interested in your reply to Chris as I have just moved to Oria in the village itself.

Do you grow the fruit trees in the ground or pots?  I haven't really got a garden so it would be pots for me.  How do they fare in the sun and do they need much water?

I live in the village myself, I have four trees in the garden and the lemon in a pot.  You can grow fruit trees in pots and depending on the time of year and the heat on how often they will need to be watered. This time of year I water my pots every other day.  Feb, March, April and May only twice a week.  Unless like some years Feb can be hot and I water three times a week.  You would need to feed every month in the flowering and fruiting months.  You may find the leaves burning in some cases but if you cover with the black weed fabric in the hottest months this does help.  If you want any more help and would like to meet for I coffee I can do this.
