Just finalising the purchase of a property in Oria and driving from UK via ferry to Bilbao on 3rd July.

My question is this:

I have a right hand drive Jaguar.

Do I come over in that and then purchase a Spanish car. Or do I buy a LHD car in UK and then come over in that. Would it have to be a Spanish LHD or is it reasonably simple to change the registration from another EU country(ie French /German) etc.

As you can tell, I'm really unsure which is best option 🤔🤔

Cheers

Glen

I would come over in your UK car then buy a Spanish car,it's to expensive to convert your UK car Spanish rules.

Then sell your UK car to anyone returning back to the UK.good luck.

Or maybe, if you have to pop back to Britain for something, you can drive it back and sell it there, possibly for a bit more than you'd get here?

if you have a rhd car in Spain(Europe) you have to change your driving style when trying to overtake on non motorway roads, matriculation costs vary but the biggest costs are things like headlights,if you can buy them in the UK  all well and good.

buying a lhd car in the UK is a good way as then it is a simpler matter to re register

Spanish secondhand cars are expensive

Is it easy to change registration from French to Spanish or German to Spanish... Or do I need to look for Spanish registered here in UK.... Seen a few but some are Spanish... A couple of French... German... Swedish... Italian... etc etc

French/German/Dutch cars should be easier to re-register in Spain as 1)they are already set up for LHD 2) they should have a certificate of conformity for the EU which makes things easier.

As for buying a Spanish car in the UK it could be a legal minefield unless you have proof that the owner has de-registered it from their name,as any back tax/fines etc would be down to you, there was a couple a few years back that nearly lost everything when they bought a Spanish reg car that had been in a very bad accident as they were at first held liable for the payout to the injured persons family it took years to prove it was not their car at the time

As I said before just buy a Spanish car in Spain, save all the hassle that you will get when you import. I own a Spanish car as a run around its cheep to run and passes its ITV.every time, and it only costs me penny's to insure every year when I come to my holiday home.

Hi there, we bought a car in Germany and drove it here it cost 1200 to matriculate it here this was 2 years ago. At present we are looking around to buy another car here and can agree with everyone who said Spanish second hand cars are expensive. We also notice how much mileage are on cars we've looked at, And still very expensive. Good luck whatever you decide. Patricia
