Hi, unless things have changed, you can buy a car but I am almost sure you need a pardon certificate.

Re driving lessons, from other posts Tijola driving school speak English but wherever you go the practical test is in Spanish, don't know if an instructor can sit in with you so that is all I can tell you. You will probably get lots more answers with more details.

As Paul says you’ll need a Padrón certificate to purchase a car and many places now also ask for NIE.

Thanks DarioMartin we have our NIE numbers but I suppose we will have to wait for the Padron or would we be able to get one before we get there?

No, you can’t get your Padrón until you actually either rent or buy a place.  A Padrón certificate says you are resident in the area.

You will also need a Padrón certificate for your TIE’s anyway.

One thing I forgot to mention, unless I am mistaken and stand to be corrected, you can't get a Spanish driving licence unless you have your residencies.

That is correct, legal residence is a pre-requisite of obtaining a Carnet de Conducir, but I believe from the querent’s responses that they have obtained residence

Hi, we are not residents but own a holiday home and due to the spiralling costs of car rental was thinking of purchasing a Spanish car to use when we visit. We have NIEs but I thought I’d read somewhere on this forum that you shouldn’t register on the padron until you are resident/applying for residency ? If so does that mean I couldn’t buy a Spanish car until we eventually go through this process?

Have you thought about driving down from the UK. 

You could sail Portsmouth to Bilboa .

Them it would only be a short drive.
