Hi, I have joined the foram in hope that we can get an idea of what the area is like. My wife and I have recently retired and we are hoping to move to Spain. However the new requirements are complicated which is putting us off. Is there anyone who has been through the process of applying for residency. We would like to hear from you. Thanks Gary

Hi Gary

You may be aware that the process for residency has recently changed & so hence you may struggle to get info at this point in time from anyone who has fully gone through the new process.

Whereas before, the process could be undertaken from within Spain itself, now the requirements are that the visa applications for residency need to be initiated form the country of origin (i.e. the Spanish Embassy in the UK in your instance).

Not sure if you're aware of the Citizens Advice Bureau in Spain but they have a wealth of info on their site (and their FB page) for all matters around this

Here's the link for the info on their site

https://www.citizensadvice.org.es/residency-visas-for-relocation-to-spain-for-uk-and-non-eu-nationals/
Also make sure you're linked into the 'Brits in Spain' FB page which is the official page of the British consulate in Spain as they have a number of useful threads & videos about the processhttps://www.facebook.com/BritsInSpain/
Yes it seems that the process is now a bit more convoluted than it was before but don't let it put you off. Anything is achievable & forums such as this will always be a valuable resource. But what I will say is please keep in mind that Spain and the Mojácar region, are like any other place in the world. You and your wife will have your own requirements for the kind of place that suits you for your own lifestyle needs....so whilst its great that you can get some kind of feel from forums like this, nothing will ever replace the experience of being 'on the ground'. The Almería region has so many diverse towns, villages & communities & its imperative that you experience the different parts for yourself so you can make your choice before leaping into residency. Myself & my other half spent ages looking online but its not until you land & experience things for real then you start to filter out what works & what doesn't work for you.
Just for background info my situ is that we're literally on the verge of making the permanent move when things allow. We have our residency (obtained under the old system) & we have our place in Mojácar. Our UK house is about to go on the market. Although I'm in Yorkshire I work in Manc & have lots of connections there so hence when I saw the subject heading it resonated! I'm fortunate that my employer is ok with me working remotely from Spain.....so if there's anything at all I can help with then please shout.Cheers, Rich

You may want to make the move sooner, rather than later ... unless you’ve been here for 5 years and have permanent residency, the requirement of continuous residency stipulates that to not forfeit your Residencia, you must spend a minimum of 183 days a year in Spain.  By necessity this makes you tax resident in Spain as well and liable to pay tax in Spain on worldwide income.

if you have already been here 5 years, then there’s a little more grace - you can spend up to 5 years uninterrupted outside the country without forfeiting Residencia.

Post Brexit, continuous residency is being scrutinized to make sure people aren’t getting Residencia pre-cutoff, then leaving the country and coming back in a couple of years when they decide to make the move.

Yeah, trust me we're trying to make things happen as soon as we possibly can.

Our UK property needed additional works to get it market-ready but they're complete now. I've also retained a specialist tax lawyer given the complexities of our situation.

A small glimmer of hope in that as of yesterday the rules have been relaxed slightly for travel (updated on GOV UK website) so that when the flights become available we can now travel with our TIE Approval Letter (our TIE cards are waiting for us to pick up in Almería).

So we are on our way asap
