My wife and I are looking for permanent move to Spain from UK this year

Had a look around Villamartin area over Christmas. Nothing caught the eye.Same with earlier trip to the Murcia area.

Mojacar next on our list.

We are non drivers, so easy access to amenities and public transport a priority.

Looking for small property, 1 or 2 bedrooms when the time comes.

Any suggestions regarding most suitable area of Mojacar for us would be appreciated.

Many thanks.

Hi Dave and welcome to the forum.

We looked around most areas for weeks before finally settling in Las Burganvillas near Garrucha. Its a lovely little area with bars, markets and restaurants and everything you could wish for. We found a 1st floor apartment on an urbanisation with pool and no steps...thinking of our twilight years lol.

Going off topic though I want to share a little house hunting tips with you from our personal experience.

We found that having elderly parents living out in Spain, we had chance to see how they coped with everyday living and the factors involved when you become less mobile. When they moved they where spritely 60 somethings with a car and less aches and pains. We decided to rule out anywhere with too many steps...think of wheelchair access if god forbid something happens to your mobility and you cant access your home. Also a bus stop on the main routes into Mojacar and Vera was also essential for getting around to the markets and such.

Our place is off the main roads but about 5 minutes to all the shops and bars and about a 7 minute leisurely stroll to the Playa.

Try to have a look at the area if you get a chance. Its about a 15 minute drive or 30 minute bus journey from Mojacar .

Hope this helps you with your search and good luck.

Kev.

Thanks for the swift reply and the info Kev.

Have been looking at step free access homes on all our ventures so far.

I am 60 and my wife 59, so not an issue at the moment, but very important for the future as you say.

Will have a look at Las Burganvillas and Garrucha areas online.

Thanks again, much appreciated.

All the best,

Dave B.

No worries, glad to help if I can. I am a young 48 but I could see the problems with steps from the start. A lot of homes do tend to have step access. The only ones we have is to the roof terrace but its like an oven in the summer up there so will leave that to the kids :)

There are a few places here that seem to melt into one area and are all on the bus route (every hour in the summer months and also the land train will get you to places, although the later is rather more expensive)

Garrucha is about 15 mins from Mojacar and then you have Las Burgonvillas,Vera playa, Puerto Rey and Villaricos (great Sunday market) all within easy reach. You can walk virtually all the way from Mojacar to Puerto Rey in about an hour and a bit along the beach if you you are feeling fit. Best done in the morning though before the sun pops up.

Everyone here is biased towards their own area but it really is beautiful no matter where you decide. Pop into Spanish Property Choice in Mojacar and speak with Sharon. I believe they are making a new programme for Channel 4 and always on the look out for new buyers. They might be able to help with your requirements.

We used a company called Coles of Andalucia and they where ace. We gave them a list of the essential requirements needed in the property and they did the rest. You might have to compromise depending on your budget but most get it pretty close.

Happy home hunting,

Kev.

Hi

We live part of the year in Mojacar Playa and were fortunate to purchase in 2013 at the bottom of the slump.

We love our apartment except for July/ August when renters make living almost untenable and Mojacar turns into a quasi-Benidorm not helped by the Mayoress & her plans for the Esplanade.

Apart from a narrow coastal strip Mojacar Playa is hilly, gratefully we are on the flat. Public transport is poor.

We bought via SPC & found them amateurish. We roared at the pretensions expressed by them on TV.

Rent before you buy. We have been here for 15years and the difference between the various Coastal resorts is quite immense. Also consider a winter & summer rent as the difference is chalk and cheese.

Think CHAPS transfer if buying from a BRIT.

Don't use a Solicitor recommended by the Estate Agent.

Use Money transfer agency not bank.

Anything else specifically feel free.

We hated Villamartin and Torrevieja when we looked in that area and so pleased we came south-west to Almeria. I have no vested in this but another agent you might want to make contact with is Paul Fullard at Next Stop Almeria (https://www.nextstopalmeria.com/). We have now bought 2 properties over the last 18 months through him  - our main one is 15 minutes inland in Los Gallardos but you'd really need a car, and the other one in Palomares for renting out is in walking distance to bars, shops and the Playa. But they cover all areas. Paul is extremely professional and less flashy than SPC (although I might be being unfair in that description, and we weren't so impressed with Coles before we came across Next Stop Almeria). NSA also have a first class after-sales service and provide excellent advice and assistance for any trades or works you need, furniture and everything else. Highly recommended so you might want to browse their website.

There are lots of lovely apartments and duplex mouses in Mojacar along the paseo de medeterano, which is the road going from one end of Mojacar to the other. There is a bus service among this road connecting to nearby towns. Lots of restaurants to choose from and 2 supermarkets  in Mojacar.
