Hi,

My husband and I have just arrived in Mojacar and need to know how we apply for a medical card to be able to visit a GP.

We are not of pensionable age yet but we own a property here, have our NIE's and have just applied for the Padron.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Kind Regards

Karon

Are you loking to live here (or Mojacar) permanently ?

You state your not of pensionable age and with that in mind you dont really need to get medical cards..........you'll need private medical health cover which from what I've garnered means going more to a hospital rather than a local gp.

We live in Urcal near Huercal Overa and  are lucky enough to have a local doctors surgery in the village.

From recollection we visted the surgery, got registered with them and had some paperwork to fill in and take to the local Spanish social services in order to get onto the Spanish medical system, In all it took round about 3 weeks to get our medical cards. Quite a bit of paperwork, legwork, stamps etc.

The registration process with your chosen gp once your of pensionable age is very thorough, ie, blood and urine samples, ecg and prostrate/mammogrammes, as much medical info as you'll ever have in the UK !!

No doubt you'll get more advice but even with a property, padron, nie, residencia eventually, etc etc not being of pensionable age will cost you going privately till you are.

Best place to start may be contacting CAT Services for help and advice or even Citizens advice if theres one locally.

Check in the free Focus magazine available monthly from lots of places.

Might I ask what ages you are ?,  a "perk" of being on the Spanish system for "Pensionistas" is that we only pay around 10% of a prescriptions full cost.

We’ve just gone through this last week.  Neither of us are pensionable, but having registered now with social security and paying Autónomo as of Monday 8th, we can now register for health card.  Without paying autónomo, I believe you will need private health cover.

Is there a requirement to have lived here for a minimum of 12 months before starting the medical/health card process ?

Hi,

Like Chevy we are old.& worn out,  I speak personally of course, & registered with the Spanish system, but while you fight your way through the Spanish beaurocracy would you not use your EHIC attending the GP Surgery with EHIC & Passport.&.possibly Interpretor???? Or Urgencias if dire?????

If you are on continuing medication then you will find that the majority may here.be OTC at any Pharmacy, although some can be obstructive. Often we will just buy our meds.rather than nook a GP appt.

There us a Private GP in.Centro Commercial.

Pharmacies take BPs.

Happy New Year,

Bob and Sandra
