We are coming to live permanently in Urcal and have 2 years before we are pensionable age. Could someone give a step by step proceedure for going down the autonomo route, we have read so many different variations over the months, it’s all a bit confusing!

Autónomo rules changed as of 1/1/18 which is good news for you!
If your wanting to go Autonomo route, I’d suggest getting yourself a good Asesora who can navigate the various bureaucratic pitfalls that await the unwary.
We’ve just completed this past week this very thing, so I can give you my take and perspective on it, though it’s possible others will have different ideas.
1) we didn’t need to get Residencia, but DID need an NIE - that’s a pre-requisite. In Almería, you can’t just “get” a NIE anymore - you must have a reason, such as a major purchase like a car. You would then need to present the pre-sale “contract” along with the EX-15 to get a NIE. It may be easier therefore to obtain Residencia....
2) That being said .... to obtain Residencia, you must now have proof of an income - be it a pension or another income. If it’s another income, I.e. work .... you will need proof of paying Autónomo .... Catch 22. However you obtain your NIE, once you get that, you apply to the Oficina de Seguridad Social in Huércal-Overa for Social Security numbers.
3) Having obtained that, we then needed to “register” with the Job-Seekers office in Huércal-Overa for a “Demanda en Alta” and also present at the Vera Ayuntamiento for a Digital Signature.
4) Having achieved all that, we now start to pay Autónomo as of 1/1/18 ....
5) As of 1/1/18, Cost is 50,00€ For the first 12 months. That goes up to I think 175,00€ for the next 6 months, then 225,00€ for another 6 months; after that it’s then fixed at 275,00€ a month.
Again, I would strongly advise / urge / recommend getting an Asesora to guide you through these complex and murky waters
With regards Residencia, if you are not receiving a pension, you will need to show in a Spanish Bank account an income with an annual average of 8.350,00€ - the bank issues a certificate called a Certificado Bancario Saldo Medio Anual to show that ...
I think this may have raised more questions than it’s answered, but those are the steps we had to take to register to pay Autónomo

Hi, why do you need advice on autonomo ?, just googled autonomo and flashed thru the multitude of categories that are just one part of autonomo and right up to the final paragraph it seems to be angled more at being in business.
Are you coming here to retire or looking to set up some kind of business till you become pensionistas ?,
Is it just the medical side of the equation you need information/help with ?.
We are both of pensionable age and love it here in Urcal, welcome in advance, look forward to meeting up, theres usually something going on be it birthdays or trying different restaurants lol. Local bar is the meeting place. Thursday is darts nite lol. Bar is a mix of Spanish and english.
Post what it is you think you need autonomo for and the people on here should be able to help get you what you need.
Some have recommended talking to citizens advice, but usually google will help as much as anything.
Theres a group doing spanish, free in town, mondays and wednesdays, theres free spanish on a more casual level at another local bar wednesday lunch time.
Theres the beginnings of a cycling group, male and female. Everyones so friendly.

Regarding Residencia, are you buying a home or renting ?, if your buying your solicitor should get you your NIE because you'll need it to do the purchase of your property.
If your renting you'll need to get details of the property, what you pay etc from your landlord.
Again if your buying your solicitor should also be able to help get your residencia.
We used Mandy and Cris from Camconcepts up a street more or less opposite the post office in town, english but very fluent spanish speaking, Chris took us down to the foreigners office in Almeria to get our residencias, cant praise them enough.
For general help and information on such things as getting our car thru matriculation and onto spanish plates we went over to CAT Services in La Alfoquia.
They may be able to give you background information on the autonomo thing.

As we don’t receive a pension, Autónomo was necessary to get on to the medical system and be covered. EHIC card is only useful if you are visiting. Once you take up residency here, i.e. get a Spanish address, you will need Autónomo to get on health system, or private health cover

Hi, as above we are old fogies lol, your able to give better advice to pre pensionistas due to having to go thru that level of beurocracy.
We gor Nie's, partner got hers as part of buying her villa, I got my NIE when we got Residencia, I also piggybacked onto the padron likewise.
We got medical cards having registered at the local gp in Urcal, going down the medical centre and social security system route to get said medical cards.
Easier being pensionistas but still required some legwork and form filling.
We can all only give advice following our own circumstances.
Regarding the autonomo its not something I'm au fai with if thats how its spelled so I dont try and give any advice that might rightly muddy the waters.

Autónomo is the Spanish “National Indurance” if you like. Payment of Autónomo qualifies you for health care, and after payment of Autónomo for 15 years, a pension.
As of 1/1/18, the cost of Autónomo has dropped. It is now 50,00€ per month for the first 12 months, rising to 275,00€ per month for the next 6 months, 225,00€ per month for 6 months after that and then after those two years, steady at 275,00€ per month
