Hi, thank you all for your replies. I really do appreciate the advice. Palomares will be on my must visit list when we next go back. Dawn60, can I ask how you fill your days. As a man with no real hobbies to speak of I worry a little I may end up stranded. I'm no big drinker but I do like a beer once a week. Matthew I have been told by many to rent first and that is exactly what I'll be doing. I won't be burning bridges. I have noticed that many people do buy in one area and then move on elsewhere. After spending a couple of years looking up and down the coast I felt Mojacar Playa was the right place. Kdskitchens, where you live sounds ideal, can I ask you the community name please. There is one question I'd like to ask, how do you fill your days. I've read on previous threads that it's up to the individual how they mix in. But, what is there to do. Especially for those on a budget. Thank you all.

Yes of course you may .

We purchased at palomares but rent it out as holiday let and long term in winter .

Palomares is very cheap compared to other places and I’m sure u will prob get told a few reasons why not to buy lololol

I personally am not keen on mojacer although my misses is a fan .

I work as I’m too young to retire but I don’t work to live ,

We also have a foothold so to speak in Turre and soon in Sorbas so never rest lol

Well, here are some of the things I do on a near daily basis while in Mojacar Playa.

1. Two/three mile walk every morning. In high summer I try to have this completed before 10.30.

2. Read on terrace nearly every day - newspapers and books (usually Irish authors).

3. Watch Irish news programmes on television; I take in some UK news too. I always try to watch The Chase, Eggheads and the occasional sports programme. I don't miss any Irish hurling or Gaelic Football live televised games (Saturday and Sunday).

4. Every lunchtime I would have somebody visit us and although I'm off alcohol for some years they enjoy a bottle or two of tinto on the terrace.

5. Apartments don't clean themselves so I do my bit.

6. Food must be bought daily.

7. Most evenings I would go to a nearby beach, sometimes stopping off at some beach bar (not one of the better known ones).

8. I write most days; short stories, humour pieces, some longer experimental works too. I've never had anything published, but someday I might get lucky. I think that established authors needn't worry about competition from me.

9. I am not a good landscape artist, but I try acrylics, watercolour, oils. I have some pencil drawings too.

10. I enjoy my weekly visit to Lopez (ferreteríá) just to see if I need anything for diy, painting etc.

11. We like to drive here and there. My wife enjoys garden centres and visiting the cities of Almería, Murcia, Alicante, Málaga or even Granada or the odd trip to the Alpujarras. She takes in some of the boutiques, just to see what's in, you know!

12. I enjoy talking to holidaymakers in the complex and giving them some advice (eating out, places to visit etc); anything to enhance their holiday. I try not to bore them to death.

13. My trusty bike is used one or two days per week just to visit nearby areas. I enjoy visiting Spanish bars/areas too and enhancing my spoken Spanish. During high temps I leave the bike in the lock-up.

14. We use the barbie every week, again somebody will probably call and I can inflict my cooking on them too.

15. I probably use the internet more than most. I keep up-to-date with happenings in Ireland.

16. I'm trying to improve my cooking skills.  I do simple stuff, but everything I use is fresh.

17. We go to Sunday Mass up in the Pueblo. There's a chance we'll meet somebody from Ireland. We enjoy a coffee or two in one of the local outlets while there.

18. I don't do golf and can't understand the mind-set of people who do. I used to enjoy long runs, but I'm getting a bit on for that. I wish Wimbledon never existed, but understand that some are waiting with bated breath for the annual tournament. Occasionally, during Wimbledon I amble into some Brit bar where the bar staff put on some Irish sports on the television. I enjoy horse racing as a sport.

19. Over the years we have built a good contact of friends. We visit them too, but eating out is so inexpensive we enjoy meeting them in the local restaurants. They bring us up to speed of everything UK and think that Brexit is a must to rescue the DHSS - deluded individuals, but I love them although on another thread here I've referred to them as old farts.

20. I try to listen to some quality music every night. If the apartments nearby are occupied I use headphones.

21. Daily Swim in the Med is a must even in winter.

22. My wife enjoys people watching in Spanish hotels (not Pueblo Indalo, Hotel Indalo, Mojacar Beach). If there is a Spanish wedding celebration then all the better.

23. When our grandchildren visit we use every playground between Murcia and Almería. They love playing with Spanish children and can't believe they are playing outside  after dark.

24. We do the market circuit every week taking in one of Carboneras, Garrucha, Vera, Mojacar.

That's what we do. But, we have our own transport and can use the local public bus service.

Wow, that is certainly a full week. Seems your kept very busy. I could do all that except the boutique shopping. Kdskitchens, does the community of 28 apartments have a name. All the info provided has been immensely helpful.

Broomhall, we are not actually living there yet as we are still working but hopefully in the next year or so. So far have loved every visit even though they haven’t been holidays as we have been working on apartment and doing a lot of shopping! We have been fortunate enough to meet some really helpful, friendly, kind people English and Swedish. My plan (as I am quite active) is to walk (May even take up jogging again) daily, swim, hopefully do Zumba and Pilate classes, take up Spanish lessons, explore and possibly help in local charity shops if they will have me! I may take up some new hobbies if I find some that interests me. I am not a big drinker but a cold beer, sitting outside people watching is appealing! We will also be on a limited budget so will need to find things to do that are free or low cost. Good job we are not materialistic! I just think you have to research, visit as often as you can and talk to people, listen to sensible advice this will help you form your own opinions. If it feels right go for it! Life is a risk follow your gut.

Thanks for the reply. From all I've heard and read if you put the effort in to immerse yourself then making new friends is easy. Spanish lessons are a must. Really hope it all works out as you plan. Paul

Before considering buying a property in Palomares you should be made aware of the nuclear bomb accident, due to a US Air Force B52 bomber colliding with a refuelling plane, that took place over Palomares in the 1960s. Google it and you will find a lot of info on it.

This puts people off buying there, so property prices and demand are not as high as in other towns in the area.

Think you may find that even though there was a air accident over palomares which resulted in loss of life , there has also yet to be proven of any long term health issues.

Along with The area is still a supplier for a lot of large uk supermarkets , I somehow doubt that there’s any issue whatsoever, in fact if there was an issue it would have affected far more than just palomares it would have affected the whole of Andalucia .

The cost of property is only slightly less than other areas , if it was “infected” lol I would expect a huge drop in prices , not the case.

The biggest thing of all is to make sure you don’t lose money in your purchase , so wherever you buy just be aware of is it an area that could increase in value or not.

That should help in the purchase of your future home.

Hi all, I always do a quick search online of areas I'm interested in. Usually just a read on Wikipedia. I haven't found anything to dissuade me from showing interest in Palomares. Obviously it's property we search for more than anything else. We've found prices in Palomares to be on a par with similar types of areas in that region. But, all advice and comments are greatly appreciated. Paul
