We spend six months of the year in Mojacar Playa. Our urbanisation despite what some owners say nearly has all apartments rented out especially during the summer. I look forward to meeting the renters every year, most of them return for their annual holidays every year. Those owners on the complex who say they don't rent out their apartments are not telling the truth and this I can prove. Most of these old farts couldn't speak truthfully under any circumstances. Those owners can lecture the like of me though on whom I should rent to etc. They are great at pontificating, but when challenged seem to retreat into their pitiful valley of squinting windows to continue with their boring existence.

Yes, during the summer there are weekend buses used to ferry Spanish teenagers to Mojacar Playa. Yes, they are loud, yes they leave lots of litter after them. Their buses collect them and ferry them back from where they came and the local council cleans up before 10.00am. The Spaniards got on without us Irish and Brits for thousands of years and we were all young once. I say let them enjoy themselves.

Hi to the pair of you,

Strangely although you have behaved in this fashion I and my wife never did.

I would complain about such behaviour irrespective of nationality or country.

Still some people obviously believe anti-social behaviour us acceptable. Seems a strange concept to.me.

Do agree about the majority of ex-pats though. UK TV & Bars. Probably what  they did in UK or wherever before moving out here.

Cannot comment about renting as gratefully we don't need to.

End if stream.

Bob

Hi Bob,

1. Your wife and you are entitled to your opinions. We are entitled to ours. Opinions differ on fora such as this and long may it last.

2. If you complain to the Policíá Local you need to speak in perfect Spanish. (I'm not saying you don't speak Spanish). If you don't have a good translator the Policíá won't listen to you. And who would blame them? If your Spanish is perfect, they'll listen and take notes and follow up on any enquiry that is worth following. That's my experience with the Policíá Local.

3. I would love to be a person who always occupied the high moral ground.  But, I'm not perfect. I used to drink. I used to sit on the terrace having consumed some and recite poetry, sing happy songs etc and submit to the bed in due course. I acknowledge that some others don't see it this way. We are all different and long may it last. I still occupy our terrace nightly with my wife. I smile at passers by, sometimes inviting them to join us. I try not to judge others as I already said I'm not perfect.

4. We don't live in a perfect world. Most of us don't  expect everything to be right every minute of every day. Most of us suffer inconveniences. We live and let live and recognise that the high moral ground can be very lonely place.

5. I don't know what you mean by UK television as I watch Irish television and Spanish television only. I make an exception for The Chase and occasionally Eggheads. People come on holidays. They pay their money. They occupy apartments. They are entitled to their entertainment. I'm sure if they wanted to find some solace in some remote friary they could and it would cost them less.

Select the area you think you will like - then RENT a place, fairly short term and move there.

After a few months, you will know if you want to continue there - or where else in the area, you want to move to...!

Hi Struanrob, renting is the most common piece of advice we are given. So it's very much in our plans to do so. Just really hoping Mojacar is the place for us. Many thanks for replying. Any advice is very welcome. Paul

We recently purchased in Palomares about 25 min drive from Mojacar. Having visited at different times of the year we preferred its quieter location but within easy reach of many places. It is a rural, farming village with several bars (some serve food) and a few restaurants. We can walk to the lovely beach in 15 mins and our apartment has sea views. Personally I prefer to be away from the more touristy spots and love the fact that it is undeveloped if not a little shabby in parts. Seems to be a good mixture of Brits, Dutch & Spanish. Yes we have noticed a small minority of people that like a drink or three but as yet, nothing offensive or outrageous. Take a drive around the outskirts of Mojacar can’t do any harm. Good luck with whatever you decide.

Yes we purchased palomares too. Love the place and occasionally live there, and we have never seen anyone being anti social , although I’ve heard a few stories relating to the fact lol 😂

I’ve never understood the need for over 340 bars and restaurants cos 2 pints and I’m done , 😎 love the atmosphere of palomares, live music most weekends, I’m not sure how many bars probably a handful , restaurants even less , but has a bank, pharmacy, doctors, office supplies, brilliant ferriterria . Nice people.

We have community of 28 apartments and only 4 are rented out , we rent out too and have never had any issue with our American, spanish, or English guests.

I think though that mojacer has such high demand for rentals , people tend to find its used to generate income more than say palomares . Even though price is much higher the yield may also be.

I enjoy exchanging stories with people who bought property in Spain. Many do it for investment, some do it "I-had-the-few-bob-anyway" - usually atrocious liars. You get the occasional person who bought the property to satisfy their once-a-year-holiday craze, lots do it to just get away (retirement etc) from the cold northern europe weather.

Most forget the first rule of buying in Spain:- The Spaniards have survived without us for thousands of years and there's no reason why this will not continue.

My second rule for buying in Spain:- Do not sell your property from whence you came (usually the UK for most contributors on this forum).

These "rules" are first broken by the unthinking. I'm not laying down the law for anybody, but over fifteen years ago we bought our third Spanish apartment (Mojacar Playa) having sold the other two (CdS and CB). The main driver in our 3rd purchase was that many of the Brits here first lived elsewhere in Spain too and finally settled on Mojacar Playa. If we didn't buy in Mojacar we would have bought in Palomares (another place inhabited by many Brits who owned property elsewhere in Spain). We are thinking of buying in Palomares as I type (option of living there while we rent out in MP) perhaps alternating our residency.

The south of Spain is wonderful. We love every moment here. My wife is supreme at turning set-backs into come-backs. My one bit of advice for first time buyers here is to keep options open as much as possible. Don't burn any boats and leave room for a dignified retreat. Allow time for wear-and-tear of your physical body. None of us is getting any younger. Keep an open mind and mind your own beeswax, live and let live. OK! the guy a few door down rents out the place to whoever. So What! He has to live too and so does the tenant.

I better add my third rule for buying in Spain:- Never assume anything (just break down the word ass-u-me). Don't be made an ass of.
