Hi.

We have purchased an older villa in Mojacar and we need to install a heating system.  Does anyone have experience of gas versus electric or even infrared heating. House is open plan with large living space but smaller bedrooms. Thanks in anticipation.

We live in the mountains above Oria, and like others up here, we have oil C/H, I think it’s the most efficient, but any heating is pointless if you don’t have good insulation!

Hi Gerry,

The following will only be of help, if you have direct, pipped gas available within reach of the property. Electric in Spain is one of the most costly in the EU, as for oil, the initial start up costs, because of storage tank etc, will be high.

I have a 2 bed top floor apartment, which i bought in 2015, which was built in 2005/6 but never lived. the apartment is in the village of Fondon, at the foothills of the snow mountains and a hour from Almeria, so it gets pretty chilly in the winter months, plus snow in the area. The property has a gas combi boiler installation from new, the same as the UK, which supply's both C/heating and hot water, and works very well, allowing for the poor heat insulation in almost all Spanish properties.

From over 5yrs of use so far, it has proved great, especially when we are out there in the winter periods. The system has to be signed off every 5yrs for safe use.

Hope all this helps for your choice, see photo's. Tom.

Thank for the reply.

Unfortunately no mains gas.  Bottle gas is a possibility but I am not sure how it would work for heating a whole house - only used it for cooking. I know the bottles are much larger but not sure now effective they would be for heating.

Thanks again for info,

Gerry

You will need a outside gas tank the same as oil, most company's supply free, but do check.

Tom.

Hi GERRY.We had oil c/ heating installed three years ago and cant fault it.we have a 1,000 ltr.tank and at the time diesel was a little higher than now   I would say it works out cheaper than gas or electric as you know the electric  in Mojacar trips off quite often, friends of ours had all electric  and it wasn't long before they changed to oil, while the c/ heating was on they couldn't use other electric appliances as it was tripping all the time. Our Other friends had gas installed using the very tall gas bottles he needs 6 to run the fire  and  never uses the c/ heating. Think that says it all. At the moment the diesel is very cheap, our tank ful bas lasted us three years.

Sorry should have said three winters so far and still got some left!!

We had gas central heating installed last year.  3 bed detached house.  Repsol provided/installed the gas tank free of charge BUT with a 5/10 year term of Repsol supplying the gas.  Don’t know how much the heating will cost as we have not had to refill the gas tank yet.  Baxi combi-boiler.  All pipes installed within the outside of the walls so not 1 ugly pipe in view.  Embedded within the walls/with rubber piping to retain the heat.  Excellent form of heating.  You can get different shaped gas tanks, depending on garden size.  Carlos Saliente installed ours (based near Albox).  Been a gas engineer for years and installed many central heating in properties near us.  Carlos has a website.  You can get his number off here.  Took almost 4 days to complete.  Oil heating, from memory, has higher initial costs and boiler requires more servicing than gas/thus more expensive that way.
