Hi. Personally I wouldn't go anywhere near Chartres - too near Paris. I have done the Girona, Lyon, Dijon, Reims route a couple of times. But my preferred route is Albacete, round the Madrid by pass and then Burgos and San  Sebastion. Then Bordeaux, Tours, Le Mans, Rouen. Fill up with fuel b...

...efore you cross from Spain to France, you'll probably have enough to get you to Calais then or at the most a splash and dash at French prices.

I've always found this route to have less road works through France. It's a couple of days for me from Mojacar to Calais but that is hard driving with an overnight stop somewhere south of Bordeaux. The worst part of any trip is hitting a city at rush hour , either morning or evening so going through Bordeaux at a weekend would be a good idea!

Hope this is of some help.

regards,

I fully support the albacete, Madrid route (pick up the Airport Spur then follow Signs North to Burgos). I have travelled this route many times! If you want a break from From Motorway driving after Bordeau, pick up the N road (before the Toll) to Angouleme, lots of Pit stops on the Bypass.

Stay away from Chartes. after Tours head for Rouen then Abbeyville, Bologne, stay on motorway to the Tunnel. Pre book if possible using Card, then on arrival just put your card into the Ticket Machines then slot into whichever lane allocated. Take something eat, drink, read. there are Toilets in each "Pod" Drive on Drive off couldn`t be easier!  Bien Viaje!

Angouleme is lovely, a nice Appartotel for an overnight and nice restaurants in the town.

Enjoy!

If you go Angouleme or Limoges route and you have a couple of hours to spare, then highly recommend you visit Oradour Sur Glane, which is a village that Nazis razed and the French left as is.

I will never cease to be amazed by the places that I have never before heard of or visited or by the knowledge & Information that my fellow Ex Pats have accumulated & stored away. I will definitely have to visit "Oradour Sur Glane" when i will next be in the area of Angouleme. Great suggestion!

We knew very little of France until we started travelling through it. It was somewhere we flew over while on the way to somewhere else. Beautiful country. Try stopping off at Biarritz too if you get the chance, a real treat..

I agree!

I wonder if its worth having a topic for this journey separately. It seems it is a well travelled route. Wouldn't it be nice to have reference tool so that when folk find places of interest or great hotels they can post here. Over time it would create a wealth of knowledge and make what can be a very tedious journey ( especially alone! ) into something a little more enjoyable. The odd detour off the main route would be a welcome break for many I'm sure.

Just a thought
