I read somewhere that the UK is allowing EU citizens to double up their 90 day allowance and stay in the UK for 180 days and then leave for 180 days . Is there any talk of the EU reciprocating this ? I’m interested in buying a property in Spain to avoid the worst of the British weather however my understanding is that after 90 days I would have to leave the EU , meaning I could not spend all the bad British weather in Spain without applying for residency which I do not want to do
Not a chance, certainly not in the next 5-10 years

Thanks for the reply , I also believe you cannot stay for say the last 90 days of you’re 2021 allowance in October , November and December and then stay in January , February and March using the first 90 days of you’re 2022 allowance ? If you stay for 90 days you have to get out for 90 days

Correct, it’s 90 days in any 180 day period.

If in doubt, check your dates in a Schengen Calculator on line as it can sometimes get a bit confusing.

Correct. It’s not a yearly allowance, it’s 90 days in any rolling 180 day period.
It will not be changed in the imminent future as it is the ruling agreed on by by all 26 Schengen Member Nations. For that to change, all 26 Schengen Member Nations would have to agree.

Additionally, that 26 national agreement could not just apply to the UK, it would apply to another 170 + other non-Eu countries.
So do not assume that anything is going to change much this side of never. Its much more likely that in 10 years, Britain might apply to join the Eu.
Except I believe that Portugal is allowing home owners 6 months stay. So I don't think that it is impossible once the dust settles that Spain will change too.

*sigh* not sure how many times I have to say this - it’s not up to Portugal - as a Schengen nation, they cannot unilaterally allow Third Country Nations longer than 90 days in 180. If Portugal are allowing homeowners that amount of time, it will be for EU citizens, not TCNs.

Sorry to say this but Schengen did not last 10 seconds once Covid arrived. Countries were very happy to ignore it and maybe they will again. So sigh if you want to.
