Just a bit of info needed to stay on the right side of the law please.

When we move to Spain in the spring and I hire a car, does my british driving licence still stand as a valid licence even though we have a Spanish home? Would you suggest I get a Spanish driving licence or just leave it with my British address on it(I still have the home in Britain that the licence is registered to) or will it be ok to hire a car with my current british licence?? I have no intention of buying a car in Spain as we wont really need one,its just a hire vehicle every now and then to stock up on larger supermarket items.

Thanks in advance,

Kev.

I would say you’d be ok with a uk license.  I’ve been stopped 3 times now and each time I have had no issue when presenting my uk license.  I have a Spanish registered car and I live here, so you hiring a car with an EU license should be no problems at all.

Ah cheers for the advice. Just wasn't sure how it works over in Spain.

Thanks again,

Kev.

Hi,

Ditto for Dario. Stopped.twice and fined twice but not for UK license. This is one of our homes but 4x4 is Spanish reg. UK license with EU emblem. Details entered into their computers. Fine, salute, be careful out there. Make sure you have your passport and the car documents.

Season's Greetings,

Hi Bob,thanks for the reply.

Why do the Police seem to stop you all so many times? Is it just a random stop at a checkpoint or do you get targeted because of the british plates?

I have been driving here in the UK for 30 years and only ever been stopped once in my life.....speeding...oops :) Is it a money generating scheme for on the spot fines or is it because they have traffic police in abundance unlike back in Blighty?

Regards,

Kev.

Not been fined - just seems to be random checks.  My car is on Spanish plates.

It could be that they have an abundance of traffic police as that is the remit of the Guardia Civil

Hi, been here since late March, UK car but now on Spanish plates, never stopped in the 1st 5 months we were here prior to getting the car matriculated. (Spanish MOT/ITV that you need to get a vehicle onto Spanish number plates).

Recently got Residencia, actually late August.

You'll find that if/as/when you get Residencia, become resident, you have 6 months driving on a UK licence with whatever kind of home address, you can own a Spanish home and still have a UK address, drive a UK or Spanish plated vehicle, doesnt seem to matter much, but after that 6 month period from getting Residencia you have to get a Spanish driving licence.

If you dont, then if you get stopped for whatever reason the Policia Local and/or Guardia Civil will hit you with an on the spot €100 euro fine. You'll find lots of posts in the forums from a guy who was stopped and fined in those circumstances.

Likewise if driving on the motovia and you come across a sign advising there's radar in the stretch of road your on, observe that speed limit. They have the same points system here as in the UK and the radar does work.

Spanish police both Local and Guardia have direct links with the DVLA also.

No matter whether your driving here or in the UK you'll find theres always someone who wants/needs/has to be somewheres in a hurry, always pays to be very very vigilant.

Btw, you'd be advised to get the coded information sheet from the DVLA with your driving licence history just in case, same hire companies will ask for it some not but if they do and you dont have it you'll be looking at buses or taxis.

Trains run from Lorca to most major destinations but theres no service in the Almeria/Andalucia area, plenty of good coach links.

Thanks for the information. We are having to produce the DVLA paper info here in Britain now as some hire companies insist on seeing it. You apply via the DVLA website and a code is produced that you quote to the hire companies and they can electronically see the info such as licence type, point etc, etc.

Merry Christmas and all that jazz,

Kev.
