Please can anyone advise me whether it would be useful to keep on paying my UK TV licence once I move to Mojacar (I can use my kids' address in UK) - would I need it to be able to watch BBC programmes etc? Also I have a Talk Talk box and can't think of any use for it in Spain but please tell me if there is before I skip it!

Also any recommendations of TV /broadband providers/installers in the area would be really appreciated. Many thanks, Polly S

I can’t think of a use for a continued license if you’ve moved here ...

As to broadband, I use http://www.4ginternet.es  - it’s a 4G service so is not requiring any installation, placement of aerials / dishes / phone lines / Fibre optics. It’s a fully portable wireless modem / router and the contact, Steve Bancroft is a native English speaker.  Cost is 59,95€ per month for 200GB with very very good download and upload speeds - I get a stable 20Mbps down, 5Mbps up (and that’s using my own router which is only 3.7G capable - a full LTE router will give much better speeds - up to 50Mbps down)

They also offer IPTV packages, which allows watching of UK TV on your television via your broadband connection ... not being an avid (or even half-hearted!) TV fan I can’t tell you much about that.

You will doubtless get many other recommendations for different broadband providers in this thread; the only advice I could offer is to contact / research them all and see what is going to work best for you

For uk tv there is no need for a uk licence, although the bbc would not agree.

Before you leave uk buy an android tv box, which once plugged into the internet will get all Sky and terrestrial uk channels.

There are many free apps that you can download and use to get uk tv.

A faster internet connection is better to avoid ' buffering' or stuttering of the broadcast in peak times.

I use wimax internet, who have a good website and they speak English. I pay 30€ per month for 20mbps.

Be wary of the many adverts offering high speed purporting to be available on wired phone lines - it will not happen as copper wire telephone lines seriously limit download speed.

My friend on such a copper wire telephone system costing more than I pay in total, at best got 2.6 max more often at peak periods no more than about 1.2mbps. He was shocked as he was getting daily buffering. You need at least 4mbps for safe viewing.

Hope you find this info useful, good luck with your move, regards Al

Al is correct re copper wire.  Your download speed over copper telephone cable will be very dependent on the distance you are from nearest exchange.  Living in a town, close to the exchange, you would get reasonable speeds.  The further you go from the exchange, the greater the drop in line speed.  Any further than about 4km from the exchange and line speed won’t be worth talking about!

We've just swapped from Wimax online to Aplinfo because as you'll find, internet providers will say "up to", which is about as vague as anyone can get.

Partner has become very dissolusioned with Wimax especially over the last 3 months or so whereby download speeds have rarely exceeded 15 and upload speeds rarely gone over .9 this in spite of her paying for 30 mbs !! Suffering buffering, blocking, loss of picture etc.

A recent 5 hour phone call had all kinds of "leave it with me and I'll get back with you promises" which in the main never happened, various people sharing partners service picture and assuring her that where they were there were no problems at all lol.

The first responder gives good if expensive advice, as I'm sure you'll get others, check out if you can get a minimum monthly contract vs a fixed 12 or even 18 month contract, check out if possible neighbours and friends as to who theyre with and what they pay for what they get and most of all how reliable the set up is.

Finally cancel your BBC payments, you can get tons of programming here with IPTV boxes, mag boxes, even Amazon firestick, sky sports everything once youve bought whichever box app or add-on, theres nowt to pay on top.

Yes, I agree Chevy' I had a similar experience with Wimax when I upgraded from 10 to 20mbps recently.

After a few days I lost download speed and it fell from average/ 19mbps to 6-8mbps.

Repeat occurrences the same thing happened. I actually cancelled, that made a difference. I now get an av of 17-19mbps, so at the present, okay.

Bear in mind if you sign up for contracts that do not fulfill their potential that you contract for, as long as you pay by Direct Debit, under Direct Debit rules either side only has to give one months notice to terminate that contract.

The Company's do not advertise this, they say you are locked into a 12/18/24 month contract.

Meaningless - if you pay by Direct Debit, as soon as you sign the Direct Debit their bank and your bank agree a one months notice and this agreement overrides that 'locked in contract'.

Do not be pressurized with threats if you try to cancel any contract paid for by Direct Debit they are meaningless. In fact depending on their attitude and particularly written threats they may even be breaking the law. I had such an incident when a well known local company could only provide me with 1 mbps or less instead of 10 mbps.

Things got very ugly femanding I pay the full contract price,  until I returned their threat and threatened them with a criminal denuncia. ( advice from a good Lawyer)  This Company learned very quickly the error of their ways.

I hope our friends on the forum learn this to protect themselves. Regards
