Should say I have 2 SIM cards -O2 for the U.K. as it allows full roaming, and Lowi for Spain. Vodafone were appalling in the U.K., being one of the first to switch off roaming and maintaining to me that they were “obliged” to stop it  because of Brexit.  I had to go with O2 as I hav...

...e a twin SIM phone which has one physical SIM card, Lowi, and an esim for the U.K.  the only U.K. company which offered full roaming on an esim was O2. Interestingly my Lowi sim allows full roaming when I am back in the U.K.!

I have to say I'm confused as to why you had to have 2 sim cards. For some time after I left UK to live in Spain I had an EE contract and was assured that Brexit would have no effect on my contract. The only reason I changed to a Spanish number was because most Spanish Banks and other institutions cannot recognise UK numbers ( The Spanish Health system in particular! ). Perhaps this is your reason or maybe your phone is locked to O2. My phone is unlocked and has a facility for an Esim and physical sim. I travel extensively and the the only time I've considered getting an Esim is to cover countries that my Spanish Digi sim doesn't cover. Esims that have coverage worldwide are expensive and so usually I've just got a local pay-as-you-go sim for the duration of my stay in that particular country.

We got the Spanish sim for the reasons you mention, but I keep my UK one to save having to inform all my contacts.

For me that wasn't a problem. If your contacts use WhatsApp, WhatsApp gives you the choice of using your old contact number or your new number. And who looks at the number anyway! I know not all contacts are on WhatsApp ( I still have a luddite friend who refuses to get a smart phone and every time I call him he asks who it is ! )  but really its no issue these days.

The reason I keep my U.K. number is because businesses in the U.K. do not use WhatsApp as often as they do in Spain, so if I need to call my utility supplier for example I had to use a SIM card and my Spanish fibre/mobile would charge me for calling the U.K. - less than Vodafone U.K. for the same call but it could mount up if I was kept online for too long.  Also my doctor’s surgery often communicates via text message and their system does not allow for international texts.  Things may change in the future but those are the problems now.  Most of my friends are on WhatsApp - it’s only customer service calls etc which are a problem

I fully understand. It’s the cost of maintaining a base in two different countries!

Absolutely!  My time is split roughly 50/50 - one of the advantages of having an Irish father!

Hello,

I would strongly recommend Lobster mobile, €12.99/28 days for unlimited calls to Spain/European destinations including UK, unlimited SMS, and 25Gb of data. No contract, cancel whenever you want.

Visit: https://www.lobster.es/referral/?referralCode=STE050324

English speaking customer service, really helpful staff etc.

Good luck!

Good afternoon

I wonder if one of you good people could point me in the direction of a Spanish Sim. We have until earlier this year been using our English phones at no extra cost. Unfortunately due to another Brexit bonus we are now paying international rates when using. Is there any advantage to using a prepai...

Any advice would be gratefully received.

I’m with 02 and spend several weeks a year at a time here and they never charge me for ringing Spanish numbers or any number really. their terms say as long as it’s not abused it’s free. Which I think means you couldn’t use it consistently throughout the year. But I do spend 6 months of the year here on and off. My partner is with sky and doesn’t have the same privileges. I even phone when not in our apartme
