At the moment I send money from my UK Santander accout to my Sabadell account via Currencies direct. For other spending I use a Caxton Card.

Today the rates are ECB Rate £1 = €1.1629 Currencies Direct €1.1320  Caxton €1.1358 So both about 3 cents lower.

If however I have a UK Virgin Money account and use my debit card in Spain there is no fee and the rate is €1.1627 Only 0.02 cents lower. I am thinking of switching to Virgin and doing away with Caxton and Currencies direct. Wondered if anyone else used Virgin and if there were any unseen pitfalls!

I am also going to buy a larger property next year (provided my visa is approved!) When I bought my current property I used Currencies Direct - they tried to charge me 2.5 cents/€1 which on a transfer of €150,000 was €3,750 Ouch! I rang and argued as they had previously said the rate would be less than 1 cent/€1 and they finaly agreed 1.5cent/€1.

Any recomendations for a large transfer? I would use Virgin Money but they do not allow International transfers unless you go into the branch in the UK to arrange it - still it would be much cheaper to fly to the UK and back than pay Currencies Direct fees!

Wise 1.1671. I’ve used them for many years. First thing we did was complete the money laundering paperwork. This ensures no problems in the future. Also if you have a large transfer to do you can speak with them and negotiate a rate. As you can see it’s worth shopping around.

Agree Wise.  Excellent rates and easy to transfer money.

Agree with the others, Wise all day long, good rates and excellent app for transfers and transfers that usually complete in 1 to 2 mins...

Get the app for both wise and CD. Compare. However, I have found that with either, it is best to send many smaller amounts just under their max limits, and you have no 'overcharging' bit more work, but with planning you have say 150k done in a workweek.

Thanks for all the replies.

Had a look at Wise, it seems better than those I have been using. Their fee is 21p + a variable fee depending on size of transfer but this is usualy about 0.4% So for a £150k transfer £592 . Much better than I paid last time.

Using Virgin the fee (a slightly worse exchange rate by 0.28%) would be £420

Had a look at Revolut before but found it a bit confusing as it seemed to want my to open a full bank account with montly fees.

Think I will switch to Virgin in the UK and use their debit card in Spain (no fee and rate 0.28% below ECB)

Thats UK side sorted......next is to switch my Spanish Sabadell account - their fees have increased every year and are now €190 per year! They also tried to charge me €350 for a bankers draft when I bought my flat. I am on Mojacar for October so will check out the different banks with a view to changing when we move out perminantly next year.

You might want to explore Wise Bank. I have used them for everything from small currency transfers and substantial sums on the scale you are talking about. Their rates are excellent and my fees were low, plus I was given a "reward" refund against my bank fees. I find Wise to be excellent and have used them internationally for a number of years. Wise also let's you set future buy rates so if you want, for example, to set a rate alert at say 1.75 and a value of say, 1000 pounds, they will immediately exchange at the rate you have set as soon as it is at that trading rate without you needing to check on Currency movements yourself.

Another solid option is XE not a bank like Wise but good currency rates and live rate transactions.

Revolut are the LAST company you would want to give your money to!! They are NOT SAFE at all. I lost £32,000 in a Scam where the thief used my Revolut account knowing that they do not check the the Payee is actually the Payee. Please look on Revoluts own FB page and you will see hundreds of complaints from people saying that thei card has been used without their permission. Rubbish support. I took it to the FCA (I live in UK) and Ombudsman and there is nothing they can do coz it is not a British bank - not a bank at all...
