2099.....LOL..... love what happens when the wrong key is pressed by mistake!  As for your comments I agree 100%...... the fines would pay for a couple of dog wardens.

I think One dog beach over Winter wouldn’t kill anyone as it’s too cold to swim anyway

I recommend carrying a can of pepper spray with you. If you need to use it, get in close. That is possibly the only legal thing that can protect yourself and your pets from a determined aggressive dog. Shouting or screaming won't do a thing, as is often proven in many videos of dog attacks. Examp...

Perhaps some types of pepper spray are illegal in Spain, I'm not sure, but I've read that the fine for illegal types is 500 euro. If I had a dog, I'd be willing to pay the fine if that is what it costs to keep it alive, and I'm pretty sure police most often wouldn't be apply the fine if one uses/has it for good reasons. My wife carried pepper spray for years in the country we came from (where it was illegal) in order to protect herself from the increasing riches of diversity, but nobody made a fuss about it. She even took it onboard an airplane (which I definately do not recommend) by accident once and the baggage controllers either didn't spot it or ignored it.

So many good suggestions and very good comments in this post.

As it has been pointed out the police is the only option em68in your case.

I do have a suggestion for those who may find themselves unable to go to the police or are suddenly in the sitution of an attaking dog or feel that they maybe in that position you can use a small can of hairspray or the instant breath fresners sprayed at the eyes of the dog.

I lived in New York City for over 35 years (some of that tiem during the70's and 80's which were harrowing times there) and pepper sprays had not been around then but the hair spary /breath spray . Thye were readily available and were highly effective against humans . Recently I have found  hair spary works with dogs as well.

For the more DIY inclined you can make your own pepper spray just a quick Google will produce quite a few results. Its truly scary what can be found on the web.

My partner is very affraid of  large dogs  and completly freezes on the spot at the sight of a large dog charging at us. That being the case I carry one on our walks on the beachs' or across the campos in Granada.

I have had experiences with a dog charging at us and I am not willling to risk that it just wants a pat on the head. It took me good while to convince my partner that we could be safe on our walks

I do not see why I should curtail our activities or our enjoyment of walking due to the bad behavior of dogs and thier owners

Small dogs I'll just pick up and hold unitl the owner claims it but bigger dogs get a quick spritz of the spray.

One shot and thier off like the clappers.

Do not get me wrong I am not avocating harming any dogs.  I love dogs and a majority of them love me. I'll allways ask the dog owner first if I can say hello to thier dogs.

I had a liitle Terrier cross for 10 years that I loved dearly but sadly had to leave in Irleand when I came to Spain. I will hopefully again have a litlle buddy like him to walk and have the craic with  - I got a great laugh out when he got the zoomies in our back yard.

The hair spray/ pepper spary will not do any long term harm to any dog and is in my opinion an effective option

I’m Sure you meant 2009 lol.  We were up on ladders in 2003 when it was still all black mountain looking at the views when Soros started it. My best friends live on Macenas . I think peoples suggestion of a dog beach would have been great but it seems to have gone the other way for them. I...

... do however feel that since it’s Very quiet from Nov to March. they should be allowed in Winter.

I believe it is both the water and the sand/ nearby soil, that is tested for the blue flag to be awarded...... as the majority only kick the sand over the dog mess their little sweetie has deposited....if indeed they do that! (yes I have owned dogs and see what many owners do)..... then the beach would still fail for the award. No bad dogs, just hundreds of bad owners.

Lots of good points on this thread . I’ve had working dogs and pet dogs all my life . Now retired but still live on a big livestock farm with 5 rental properties on it . There are eleven dogs here . And trust me they are like humans , horses or any other living creature . Good , bad , calm ,aggressive and anything in between . It’s not all to do with bad owners . The main thing is the owners are responsible for whichever kind of dog you own or walk out . I totally agree with better policing and heavier fines . Our area of East Sussex is having lots of problems with sheep worrying . That is down to  inconsiderate owners who think their Fido wouldn’t do any such thing . In my month strolling along mojacar playa it was still plastered with dog poo and dogs off leads and on beach . Shame

At least now you can only have 3 pets in a household now in Spain.... any more you now need to be registered. I still think a couple of dog wardens handing out fines would earn more than their wages in a day. I don't want my grandchildren digging a sandcastle on the beach to find a pile of dog crap 3 inches down....

it may be law but who is going to apply it as we already have people in our apartment blocks with 5 dogs sometimes more.   It seems that the Pandemic made everybody a dog lover.

Reading with interest as we are coming over next year for 2 months with our boxer. She is friendly with other dogs but boxers being boxers seem to rub other dogs up the wrong way at times due to their over exuberance to play. My dog trainer gives all her clients advice when meeting a dog you do not want your dog to socialise with and that is to always carry some kibble or other food in your pocket. When a dog off lead rushes up to you throw the food as far as you can away from you and your dog, they will be too busy scavenging and you can move away as quickly as possible. Always on a walk scan the area for a safe place you can move to. I think the spray that people are commenting on is called pet corrector in the UK I think you can buy it on  Amazon,it is a really loud hiss and dogs usually back off.

In the long term if it was me I'd have to report the dog probably as a stray? It's  roaming the streets it could go for a child. Not sure what would happen in Spain but in France it would be dealt with.

But as the author says ... it is owned by the local bar owners.... so not a stray....

I think using kibble is quite a good idea, particularly as I nearly always have some treats in my back pocket when walking my dog!  In fact I’ve not seen the dog since the last incident so I’m hoping the owners are now stopping it from running loose
