That is interesting as I have been told it is, at most, a VAT equivalent (21%?) of the value but no idea how they value the car, assuming it is 31% of its current value, it would still be less than half the cost of buying the the equivalent (assuming the base value in the UK) in Spain. No further...

... on in my quest for clarity it seems.... Perhaps I may become an advisor to others as I go forward?

Hi there,

Very interested in this thread as I am trying to sort out a car from the Uk myself.

The question I am struggling with is how to gain access to the actual perceived value

of the car as I understand being rhd is worth less than a lhd to sell.

However it appears the Spanish system values the car the same for tax purposes.

I have matriculated a car pre brexit so have an idea of those costs.

My thanks again, I have seen the headlight units on eBay but was concerned about buying from Lithuania, you make a good point on “knowing” the car, I have kept mine fully serviced and changed the cam belt and the other belts, full service including with all the oils and filters changed on the last service, also 4 new tyres fitted.

Apparently I have 6 months to decide and will use the time to assess the situation once I am there.

Yes it is not very clear how they value a car, I have been told it is emissions, also been told age, condition and mileage.

The post about the Shogun is interesting and I will follow that up next month.

Yes the older the vehicle the less it is worth for matriculation. I could have got in a Nissan Terrano very cheaply pre brexit plus second hand lights from a scrap yard.

The newer the vehicle the so called emissions tax applies.

We looked last year... BMW 65 plate worth about £13k would have cost us £1400. We actually got a quote, but be aware of the 31% import tax now. I understand however that you don’t pay the import tax if you matriculate as part of a residency application.

Firstly there’s the cost of matriculation. Depending on vehicle, changing the headlights are normally the biggest cost.  I’ve seen costs of 2.500€ quoted for headlights alone - again, it depends on the vehicle.  I have a friend who brought her Toyota Sports (GTR?) I think it was w...

...ith her - headlights were a swine to get and the cheapest she was quoted was 2.200€ for both - and that’s just the units themselves.  Cost of fitment, obtaining ficha técnica and ITV is on top of that

Along with Brexit comes import duty if the vehicle is less than a certain age.  I don’t actually know anyone who has bought a car in recently, so I am very hopeful that someone who has done so will respond to this thread.  That aside, there seems to still be a lot of confusion arising as to whether import duty will actually be charged.

Hi yes the import tax is charged and cost circa €3000 but you can ask for an idea of the import tax for tour vehicle check out CAT services who got a quote recently for me, the car was a Hyundai less than 3 year old

I had the same desision to make. My car was 2 years old and very economical,  I would have lost a lot selling it.  I matriculated mine almost 2 years ago  , costing around €1000.   Look for a good spanish garage.  Post brexit , you may have import tax to pay.  Good luck.

There are a wide range of prices here and it appears some garages are charging what they can get away with.

If I do decide to import, I will buy and fit my own lights as I can buy a unit for £112 each and it is only a pin to take out and replace. I can then get quotes to matriculate.

I have heard before that import duty is not paid when applying for residency, which I am, so we will see.

Hi, not sure what the import tax will be as we moved from France with our RHD Volvo, having moved from the UK some 7 years ago.  Oddly enough I find driving a RHD car here, as we did in France, better all round and have had no problems what so ever.  The Matriculation cost us some euro 700.  Good luck.
