Our car is a zafira cost a lot less to matriculate.  Closer to 1500.  Could you ask for a quote from a garage that can do this for you? We used Taller Daydo Antas.  This was in 2020.

Thank you. That is a big difference but the other one may include tax which you probably did not have to pay. Not sure if we will have to as we are applying for residency but it is very difficult to get information on this.

Yes all very confusing now.  Have you looked at the citizens advice spain site.  It has lots of useful information. Good luck.  It might also help speaking to a Gestor orCATS in La Alfoquia.  Michael at Tallor Daydo speaks good English and will be able to advise you.

Should have mentioned I am a resident, this makes no difference to the costs though, which have unfortunately more than doubled from this year.  You may decide you prefer to pay the fees and bring your vehicle rather than purchase a car here - all personal choice I think.

The only point I would make about your right hand drive car, is that as it currently stands if you are applying for residency, you will be having lessons and taking your driving test in a left hand drive vehicle.

You should be able to get an accurate cost from one of the suggested contacts to be able to make a decision. Good Luck.

Thank you again.

The test is a new one to me, just reading the requirements on the Spanish Consulate website and they only say you can drive in Spain with a valid driving licence issued in the same country as your passport, I will need to investigate further.

Up until 31/12, you were able to drive on your UK licence, until you got residency, at which point you were obliged to swap your licence for a Spanish Carnet de Conducir.

That however changed after 31/12 and whilst it is still mandatory to obtain a Spanish licence to drive in Spain if you are a resident, you can no longer swap it over.  Residents who registered to swap prior to 30/12 get until 31/12/21 to complete the swap, however a UK licence ceased to be valid as of 30/6/21 in Spain.

Another Andymac on this site has just undergone the rigmarole of obtaining licence through test here; as far as I recall, he stated the theory test can be done in English, but lessons with accredited driving school and subsequent test are in Spanish. I believe he said it would cost around 600€ - 700€ to complete the course.

Unfortunately for people trying to realise their dreams after Brexit things are much more expensive and complicated, however everything is achievable.

NB. Slight side note Dario - for anyone who registered to swap their licence last year, there has been an extension until the end of October for using a UK licence 👍

Yes - I saw the extension but CAB / Brexpat in Spain are still saying that although those who registered are extended to October to facilitate the swap, UK Licences ceased to be valid 30/6 - still much confusion surrounding what this actually means - has validity now been extended to October as well?
