Hi,

We are coming over for a month mid September. We are coming over by ferry to Bilbao in my Mercedes A180. Not an especially big car. There are conflicting views regarding the carrying of spare wheels in being a recommendation or compulsory. Do I need a spare if I have the means to repair tyre with a kit? If it is catastrophic damage to tyre, ie side wall damage how easy would it be to order a replacement tyre. I will have European breakdown cover. Although I don’t want to carry a bulky tyre around with me, I have read some breakdown companies don’t like coming out to a puncture. Trying to cover all eventualities before they happen and would be grateful for any advice.
Many Thanks

We have a discovery sport only a repair kit standartd but I manage to sores a space saver wheel to be on the safe side, just in case, it takes some room up in the boot but it's better to be on the safe side

I would recommend a spare wheel as I was returning from Bourges in France two years ago on Easter Monday a friend following clipped a curb in a small village, Splitting a tyre, after a few phone calls it was impossible to get any kind of assistance, No spare wheel, just a can of inflator and that's not magic in a can! .

Luckily I was driving the same vehicle with a spare, so we fitted that, but then we had a situation of two vehicles and no spare wheel, not a comfortable feeling with 400 miles ahead of us, Get a spare even if its only a space saver.

best advice is to carry a space saver to use if needed until you can  get to a garage to repair/replace a tyre.  it's not just punctures you need to consider what if the tyre is badly damaged no inflator kit will work on that and if you do use that gunk your tyre is full of it forever.  you also can't drive at speed on a tyre with it in.  Grua lorries come out for punctures as they don't like you to DIY on the motorways in Spain. Too dangerous.

Thanks to everyone who’s replied to my query. I have decided to be safe and have ordered a space saver spare. One less thing to worry about!

my car has no spare wheel or space saver  as the manufactured 20 inch wheels we have no way of supplying anything suitable because of the large braking system on the wheels, so i only have the puncture repair kit which was supplied by the manufacturer as standard

it is a Vauxhall Astra GTC  1.6 petrol turbo 2016 limited edition which comes as standard with 20 inch wheels and braking calipers that cannot use a wheel saver , thus the manufacturers supplied  the puncture repair kit not ideal but the only way it can work, i am sure there will be other car types out there similar

the car was bought new in the UK and the car is Matriculated here in Spain and has a new ITV
