There's only so much of it you can stand though before it becomes just a depressing place.

I feel the same, that is why I used to always go there for Dec/Jan nice to sunbathe walk along the Playa etc,the big plus is that the people even locals are dressed in colour not grey and drab like in the UK,but I guess that is what you get when nearly every day you wake up and the sun is shining

Hi.... We bought in Huerta Nueva near Los Gallardos 3 years ago after spending several years in the area renting for the winter..... We love it so much with walks/ cycling all over the campo here as well as a 7/8 minute walk into the village and all its amenities, that we have just bought a larger place over the road... (if you want details of this 3 bed one we are selling just private message, it will give you a good idea of what is around) .... It is just 10km from Mojacar so you have the best of both worlds.... We did rent in Mojacar but it was just a little to manic at times for us and less for your money.... but great to pop to!  As for the weather....what can I say? Usually beautiful although colder in the evenings.... however after 3 weeks of blood rain (Calima) and mud to clear up .... welcome to global warming! Spain has never had anything like this before and hopefully never again!..... Lots of ex-pats here. Good luck with your search, a good estate agent in this area is Simon at Coles....

Hi Tanya,

We are in the process of buying in Huercal-Overa at the moment but we spent 3 months renting first we are keeping a property in Ireland too, this convinced us at to where we would and wouldn't like to live. As Matthew said, do a SWOT analysis, your budget will stretch further inland but it all depends what you are looking for house/apartment/pool/communal pool/beach/inland/remote or surrounded by English speakers or somewhere in-between. As you go inland it can go up steeply - we set a altitude limit of 500 metres but ended up lower than that. Also we are only 5 minutes from a teaching hospital which may come in handy at some stage. Make sure you  get a good solicitor. The house we are buying has things like the pool and outbuildings that are not on the plans and our solicitor has insisted they hire an architect and get things in order with Huercal-Overa town hall before we buy in September. Work out what you want, use Place in the Sun to see what's available and where it is and google maps to see if it is in a good location but be warned that there are some excellent photographers selling houses and they may not look as good when you visit them. You are not going to get more than 5-10% off the price unless someone is desperate to sell.

Wow, thank you sooo much for this. Yes we would appreciate seeing property. We live in Ireland so don't consider ourselves ex pats really as we have zero loyalty to Ireland or UK to be honest. It will just be hubby and me. 3 kids gone now. So we would just love honesty about area, life, costs, crime, weather, homes, areas, jobs. Basically anything is going to be awesome.

Yes, we intend to get a solicitor up front. We do want out a bit,but now totally alone. We have 2 dogs and a bit of ground would be fab. Defo a pool lol. It's more about lifestyle. Ease of living. Costs. We are not into touristy areas, nightlife, loud bars etc.

Hi Tanya, we have recently bought after renting and looking around for 18 months. We starting renting down near Arboleas but found the area wasn't for us. Too hot in the summer as we like to be outside most of the year and the heat and flies drove us inside. We want to grow our own food and access to water was important. Each area is very different. We came thinking we wanted to buy a particular type of house, in the campo away from everyone and ended up with something very different. Do rent first and explore different areas at different times of the year. We looked at properties in Murcia, Valencia, Grenada and more. Like you we don't have children to consider, in some ways there were too many options. Many of the people we know work self employed in many different ways. We are now just south of Oria and found a community and place that we love here. If you want to ask any more do message me. Good luck.

Thank you Amanda for that. Had not even thought of flies, mosquitos, etc. We really will take you up on messaging if that's OK? Our eldest lives in Athens. Another in England  last 1 off too. So we always said we would go to Spain after their education. We want a place out of a town, village. Not remote, but 5 minutes or so to shops, chemist etc. Garden and pool. Not into night life but love Spanish fiestas, markets etc

Hoi

We have a house in urcal near huercal obera. It's very quiet there and we didnt't have any crime. We also have a dog and the vet in huercal overa is very good. Urcal is very small but you live in nature and we like that. Living there is much cheaper than in holland. Huercal overa is 10 minutes by car. If you have more questions you can ask me.

Sorry for my english but im grom holland
