Hello and thank you for letting me join the discussion.  We are a retired couple living by the coast in SE Kent, UK.  We're somewhat disillusioned and fed up with the politics in the UK at the moment, and seek more open space/freedoms.  We've visited Spain many times together, but hubby doesn't like the costas.  We know the HB area a little and liked what we saw, when we last visited a few years ago.  We can always drive to the beach, if the need arises. Our main concern is health care.  The  NHS is good, but like anything in life it isn't perfect.  I understand if you're in hospital someone has to bring the food in for you.  Perhaps private medicine is affordable?  Maybe we should  test drive Spain first and rent.  Any comments would be most welcome.

I seem to recall this comment from a friend a couple of years ago. It sort of stuck in my mind,

oh I've just realised my question may actually be moot.  I would be ok to stay long term as I have an Irish passport, but hubby can only stay 90 days at a time on a UK passport.  Apologies for wasting anyones time on this.

Total and utter BS, nonsense and a disgraceful comment for your friend to make.

Please can you tell your friend Spain is NOT a third world country.

Family is encouraged to help with general care like to and from the toilet or helping a person eat BUT they do care for you a million times better than the UK. Please don’t tell that to many people over there as we have enough idiots coming here slagging the system off.

It was a number of years ago to be fair Jack.  I am no longer in tough with said friend, she moved to Oz. I've just realised my question is rather moot.  I am ok as I have an Irish passport, but hubby is on UK passport and there is a 90 day limit on time spent out of the UK.

If you relocate here, hubby can get Residencia as a dependent / close relative / partner of an EU Citizen - you.

Actually Jack it depends on where in Spain you live as to whether you have to bring food in. In Valencia in some of the hospitals there you are asked to bring in food, not all of them but some, also I disagree with you about the nursing, in the UK  the nurses 'nurse', they take care of your every need. Here is Spain that is not the case, in Spain the nurses only dish out the medication, everything else is left to family. I have personal experience of this,my husband was in Huervcal Overa 2 years ago, and was sick on his sheets, I didn;t visit everyday only every other day, when I turned up to visit he was laying there in the sick sheets and clean ones had been laid on the chair, he told me they had been placed there the day before and told 'ask you wife to change them when she visits'.

I personally think Spain is a third world country in many ways, its sometimes like going back to the 50's, but I choose to live here so I accept that.

Jenni thank you.  You've confirmed what a friend of a friend in the UK has just told me.  She returned to UK 6 months ago and said health care is a nightmare in this part of Spain.  Her husband was in hospital and she confirmed the lack of food when in hospital.  I lived in my home country of Ireland back in 1997 we moved to Galway.  And I used to describe it as a third world country, especially the healthcare  or lack of it, and the last thing I want to do is repeat that experience.  I was hoping this wasn't the case still in Spain.  We're  both the wrong side of 60 and good healthcare is vital.  We will discuss this together over the weekend.

Patsy, my personal opinion is you should stay in the UK, it’s sounds like utopia.

Jenni, Patsy asked about Huercal Overa, not Valencia and also I was giving opinions based on personal experiences and the care, standard of food and cleaning cleanliness was fantastic.
