My understanding is that Spain already has a 14 day quarantine requirement for all visitors which may be lifted on the 21st June.

That is correct Andy - but current announcement is that it won’t be dropped for British visitors if UK maintains its 14 day quarantine requirement

I have just skimmed through a few posts on the facebook equivalent of this forum and a few days back they were cribbing that they couldn't travel from the UK and now that they can travel on the 21st June they're still cribbing. Furthermore, there are many expats in Spain now cribbing that people from the UK can travel.

I'm glad I kept my mouth shut and I won't be travelling to Spain for several months - you won't see me stretching to catch falling knives.

I’ll be honest ... there is ... dissatisfaction ... at the prompt readmittance of British nationals, certainly amongst the local community, purely based on the perception of how UK has handled the crisis.  There is a genuine fear of re-infection from a country that has barely paid lip-service to any real containment Measures and a fear of a second lockdown.

A second lockdown, following re-infection from British nationals - or even the PERCEPTION that a second wave has occurred because of British nationals, will not endear future UK tourists ... or indeed those seeking Residencia ... to the local populace.

I am no fan of the British government, far from it but I do think some comments on the forum have been a bit out of proportion. There are around 1000 new cases per day reported in the U.K. from a population of 65 million. I think it’s pretty unlikely the British will spread the plague to Spain. By the time 1st July comes around new cases will probably have dropped to a few hundred a day at most if the U.K. follows a similar path to other European countries. The chances of hoards of marauding plague carrying Brits invading Spain I think unlikely!!

New Zealand has just reported its first 24 cases ... brought in by British travelers.

“Only” 1000 a day? Yeah .... that’s ... not ... good.  Like I say we have it well under control here.  1000 new cases a day would put us straight back into lockdown.  While UK maintains “only” 1000 new cases a day, it might be better to consider waiting until that comes down to 100 a day before considering international travel ....

By the time 1st July comes around it probably will be nearer 100 and I don’t think they  all intend to jump on a plane to Spain! 😂

Suddenly, nobody is talking about the "R" number. If the "R" number remains at 1.0* or higher it is only a matter of time before we'll have the next wave of Covid-19 in that country and the countries that country's people are allowed to travel into.

*Even an R number of 1.0 is considered too high in most countries.

While I'd love to be making plans for a break in Spain, I ain't budgin' from Ireland, like I said earlier I'm not catching falling knives.

The R number becomes less important once infections have dropped. The theory is spikes can be controlled at local level by track and trace. I doubt we’ll see serious second waves on Europe this summer. That’s my belief anyway!
