If people have a genuine reason that they couldn't exchange their licence, fair enough. But genuine reason or not, the rules were made plain and simple to everyone. I was in UK and I knew, so why did those resident in Spain not know?.

As for whether it concerns me or not, well I do have an opinion and as an as a member of this forum, have every right to voice it. Same as you do....

...

But these whingers and whiners do more to alienate the Brits from normal everyday Spanish people as they come across as arrogant and entitled so and so's thinking that Spain owes them something. Err wake up, they owe you nothing!

I try to be respectful to my hosts when I visit Spain. I'm the visitor in their country, its only right.

I've have put my brain in gear and I've decided that a lot of people have just took the piss and buried their heads in the sand.

Maybe you should be more considered in your reply.

I really think you should have also been more considerate in your comment. It automatically put my back up because you didn’t take into consideration residents reasons for not exchanging their licences. I’m not going into my own personal experience but just to say I didn’t bury my head at all. Case closed.

We are getting into he realm of What is a Fair Reason. Nearly everybody's opinion of this would be different and no doubt it would be a civil/public servant's nightmare to adjudicate on. Then you have he problem on for how long this "Fair Reason" would apply. Things on the Driving Licence front are progressing, but slowly. It was never going to be anything else. If I waned to swop my licence for a Spanish one I would be happy to wait long length of time  provided there'd be a successful outcome. A quick outcome stating "No" is not what most Brits want.

The guys jumping the queue have he potential to derail the positive efforts made to-date. Patience is what is required. UK driving licence holders are getting a more favourable hearing than say somebody from South Africa.

And to clear up one point, at least, Geordiemark has every right to post his opinion here along with every other member of the forum. We may not agree with what he says, but he has the right to express what he feels. Mind you, I'd still be fearful of him if I didn't take off immediately on green at a busy Newcastle junction. So, Ginny and Geordie, keep on posting, your posts are good and well written unlike some of the other posters whose names I'll not mention.

Yes Ginny I agree, not everyone buried their head in sand. It's just a nightmare when Spain  is so slowwww with any sort of paper work, and then dead lines are missed.

You're safe Matthew, rarely in Newcastle these days. But you are right, people sitting waiting for lights to go green before selecting a gear and pulling away are a bit of a pet hate.

I understand your frustration, but please don’t heap all the blame at Spains door.  The greatest delay came from DVLA / UK Gov adamantly refusing access to DVLA vehicle and driver data.  An argument advanced was “well no other country in Europe needs it”; the response is of course that the largest contingent of British migrants in Europe us here in Spain, a percentage of whom illegally drive UK plated cars and on UK licences.  Plus there are a large amount of tourists every year, many who either drive here or bring cars over.

Spanish authorities are simply wanting to ensure licencie and registration laws are being complied with at a roadside stop.

And Matthew is right - Brits are getting a better deal than those holding American, Australian or South African licences to name but three.

At the moment, no.  They are *STILL* haggling about little fine points in the annexes, and until the agreement is in place anyone holding a UK licence will have to undergo a Spanish driving test.  Fingers crossed it will all be in place by end of the year though.

This is probably one of the areas under discussion.
