I suppose so but not very safe for overnighting at the moment with so many jobless people and no street vendors allowed to be in sight of police so possibly desperate.  Loos are horrendously filthy too in the Aires.

Petrol stations where lorrys are parked might be a better bet or 24 hour fast food take away, eg: some MacDonald's....

...

Yes, I know I will be taking chances. I can’t see me getting a lot of sleep! Parking up close to lorries is probably my best option.

Just seen this - don't know if it's of help or value but ...

Specifically for tourists trying to return to the UK

N332 has just received this document from the British Embassy translated in 3 languages.

They advice you to keep it with you on your way back to UK.

The Spanish authorities have published a list of hotels and short-stay accommodation that will remain open during the state of emergency.

You can view the list at https://www.boe.es/boe/dias/2020/03/25/pdfs/BOE-A-2020-4027.pdf. (No need to wade through the whole document – the list is at the end).

To drive back through France, the French authorities require that you fill in a declaration to explain your reason for travel. You should also have evidence of your onward travel plan (i.e. ferry/rail ticket). Please check our travel advice page for France for the latest information. If you do not have access to the printer, you can write the declaration by hand. https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/france and we have produced the attached document, which people should print (if they can) or show on their phone.

Thanks for that. Do have the documents (including a printout of my ferry ticket). The list of accommodation looks interesting. I will certainly have a more detailed look at that. All I have to do is find ones that are dog friendly. Thanks a lot.

Please let us know how it all goes.  We’ve been here since Feb ,with dog too and rather than take the chance of French regs changing once we got to Bilbao and ferry not going, ( we would t get back down again).   then have to make a run for tunnel we’ve decided to wait it out. Even if that is October and even until U.K. is over it too.  Have a safe journey.

from the OPs post

I am setting out for Dieppe on Saturday for DFDS sailing. Does anyone know if the non commercial aires are open in Spain and/or France?

nowhere does it say starting in Spain and going to the UK just asking if the aires are open

Actually if you read it again it does tell you it's Spain to UK as you wouldn't go 'to Dieppe for a DFDS sailing' unless you were sailing to the UK would you? Sorry but so many people didn't pick this up I just had to say this in defence of the poster. I am in a similar situation and the info of the Aires was very useful, so thanks to whoever posted that.

Thanks for all the help and support. I am now only 140 miles from Dieppe and DFDS still haven’t cancelled! I have mostly used motorway service stations and only once have I felt uncomfortable and that was in Spain. I have to say that I have been pleasantly surprised by the standard of the French motorway aires, even the smaller ones have excellent, clean toilet facilities. I did manage to empty my toilet cassette (legitimately!). I will elaborate when I’m home but if anyone needs any info urgently, I’ll try to help. Hope to be home on Good Friday.

I did have a good trip (all things considered). I even enjoyed driving on the M25!
