Maureen - I know everyone recommends a currency broker, and so perhaps this isn't a popular answer but tbh for a lump sum transfer we got the best rate by our UK bank. Sum quoted to us by two brokers was quite a bit higher in total GBP costs ( one was a few 1000's) and all took longer than the 24 hrs it took the bank. I cant explain why this was the case, perhaps someone else can

We have used Currencies Direct from purchasing our house to current day. You can now use your debit card to do the transfer and if you are doing about  7k or above check rates from other companies then ring them. If they come with a lower rate, tell them what you have been quoted by another company and most times they will equal it.
