Hi has anyone applied for EU citizenship by decent? I am considering this option to allow me to move to Spain as my grandmother was Irish.  Just wondered how long this took and if anyone has done this post brexit.

Thanks

It's quite a quick operation.

Get forms on line.  You need yours, your parents and Irish grandparent birth certificates, then just fill out the forms and send off, with passport pictures etc

Thank you, that’s reassuring. Having looked at the Irish register site, they are claiming it can take 2 years due to covid backlog. I’m in no rush just thinking of doing it to enable me to move to Spain in a couple of years time.

Hi, although my father in law lived in Arboleas  for  many years he’s now back in uk so could not really answer this. What would be a fair monthly outgoing currently for a couple, eg food, pool, air con  etc. other utilities and charges, I’m vegetarian and we do not drink alcohol!

Thanks

Have to say I’m really surprised  at the 6 week time scale. My son has just had his Irish citizenship approved over 2 1/2 years of application, and he still has to apply for the passport.  My brother, who is half Irish like me, took 9 months just to get the passport a couple of years ago, although this was a couple of years ago and things may have speeded up since.  By contrast I got the passport itself within 4 weeks but that was in 2014 when Cameron first announced he was calling a referendum

Hi thank you for your response, it seems timescales vary quite a lot. I am not in a hurry but as we are planning this move for the future, I’ll start the process and wait!  Does having Irish citizenship and passport a) permit me to live without any other hoops to jump through and b) permit my husband to reside there also, again without any other requirements?

Thanks

Hello,

I sense there are different applications going on here? Passport and Citizenship and Residency possibly? The timescales are different for each and depend on how you are applying - there are different embassy and Dublin routes depending on what you are applying for and where you are currently located in a legal sense?

The Irish websites seem to have clear instructions on methods and often cite up to date estimates of times, any time I have referred to them but there are different pages for the different applications suggested above. I would suggest looking for your specific question in an internet search and it will be best if you understand exactly what you need / want before applying because your application could wait months before finding you went the wrong route and then it just falls flat - it wouldn't be passed on to the office you really need?

Hope that helps.
