Please don't shoot the messenger, this is an update regarding the inclusion of the U.K. on the 'annex 1' list after the end of transition .

This list determines which third country nationals are permitted to enter the EU with regard to covid restrictions.

There is one more review of the list due on 16th December, but as it currently stands non residents will be restricted to essential travel only from 1st January, and the response quoted here states that any change is likely to be 'delayed' whatever that might mean.

This post is simply for information as there has been lots of discussion over the last few days.I

Their huge income from tourism will collapse entirely if they do to that for too long.

Mmmm. no.  It won't.  It's a fallacy that UK contributes so much to Spanish tourism that they can't do without it.  It's a nice boost for sure, but not essential.

I imagine that restriction will be relaxed when vaccinations here get fully under way ... which, coincidentally, will be JUST about the start of the tourist season

No fallacy it's a fact.

Bear in mind also a large % of the population won't be having the vaccine.

It’s most definitely not a fact.  UK tourism is not a major portion or Spain’s GDP.

And in Spain, I envisage a large proportion of the populace will have the vaccine.

I can also foresee visitors from non-EU high risk countries being required to either have the PCR / TMA test before arrival or a certificate of vaccination.  We will see then how many are wanting to either get back to their second homes or have a holiday.

If Brits do desert, it’s entirely possible we’ll pick up the slack with the Germans who normally visit the Canaries - property is much cheaper here.

Anyway, EU budget has passed and €140 billion is earmarked for Spain, PLUS, Spain has passed its own budget breaking years of gridlock there. Things are looking bright here.

10% of the 140 B is value of UK visitors, 1% of spanish GDP. However in some of the more rural areas the the british visitor is of much greater value.

PS visited Valle de Este in our November visit ,prior to local lockdown, very impressed, but think I prefer Funte Amarga.

Hmm....Rwanda is included but not the UK.   How intriguing!

Fact the 140 B you quote 70B is in loans which needs to be back, which they don't want and the other 70 B is over 5 years. Maybe not that bright.

As for British tourist contributions to the Spanish economy, i would check you facts, the largest business investor in Spain is the UK.

No, Switzerland is the biggest business investor in Spain; British COMPANIES are the second biggest investor, and maintained that position despite Covid, although overall investment for 2020 was very markedly down on 2019 - 1.004 billion as opposed to 3.125 billion in 2019.  This is not projected to contract - in fact more companies are projected to open branches / offices here to comply with European regulations and maintain access to the very lucrative and vast European market.

Whilst British tourists amounted to around 18.000.000 in 2019, compared to 11.000.000 each from Germany and France, per head they spent LESS and overall contributed less than their German and French counterparts.

You’re also not completely accurate regarding the allocated money.  140 billion in total, 72,5 billion in direct transfers to be used between 2020 - 2026, the rest in loans.  Spain is the single biggest beneficiary of the EU recovery fund.

Just a couple of quotes from statistics found on recent Google searches. Both surely show the significant input by UK tourists to the Spanish economy.

Expenditure of UK tourists in Spain 2004-2019

This statistic shows the expenditure of tourists with residence in the United Kingdom visiting Spain from 2004 to 2019. The expenditure of UK tourist on travel to Spain reached around 17.9 billion euros in 2018.

EMPLOYER ASSOCIATION CEOE

The report also underscored the importance of British tourism to Spain: the UK is the country of origin of a majority of tourists, accounting for 21% of all arrivals and 19% of tourist spending in 2019. It also noted that British nationals are the main foreign buyers of homes in Spain, representing 14% of all purchases by non-residents last year.
