There is also the imperfect tense of tener and poder, which are used very frequently in Spanish
tenía = "I had"
podía = "I could"

Near enough. 👍
That one has always amused me. The other Churchill quote which is near and dear to me is, "Golf is a good walk spoilt." Anyone who has ever played golf badly like me) will appreciate both the humour and the truth.
I'm quite impressed by the version of word used being dependent on distance.
If I've got it right, aquel is used if "that" is not close. However, este/esta if "that" is near.

I would have used the word eso/esa for "that" if the object is close
este/esta mean "this"

Not quite - “aquel” is “that over there” as opposed to ahí & allí being “there” and aquí being “here” (NOTE: “allí” can also be used to express an indication of time - Allí fue cuando se dio cuenta de que podía cambiar. — That's when he realized that he could change.)
Por ejemplo:
Ese libro ahí - that book there
Aquel libro - that book over there
It depends on what you mean by “close” I guess. I’ve had it explained that if the item is in front of you, it’s the first version. If said item is on a table the other side of the room, it’s aquel
I was given a similar example. The house I'm standing directly outside of and the house over the road.
Sounds like I've sort of got it right.
