Already using Duolingo, which I think is pretty good. As you say, a lot of repetition. But hey, it works.

As for the others you have suggested, I will absolutely check them out. My thinking is to work through Duolingo until the end. Then commence with the new ones. That way, I'm starting each one with a knowledge base well above zero.

Does that make sense?

The other plan my wife and I have is to enrol in Spanish classes once we have moved to Spain.

If I cant get by after that lot, I'll resort to typical brit, ie, put the letter O on the end of every word and speak really loud. :-)

Thanks again for all of your help. Lee

đŸ€Ł I’m laughing because there are people who actually do that 😂😂😂

I tend to run parallel with DuoLingo / Wlingua as Wlingua is specifically Castellano and good for keeping on track.

SpanishDict is as it’s name suggest, a dictionary and useful for figuring out gender of words, example phrases and of course verb conjugations

Thoughtco.com is fabulous for tips, hints and clearing up confusion o de different words. i.e. the ways “Lo” is used in Spanish

I KNOW there are brits who do that. Makes one proud to be from England..........................NOT!!!!

My wife and I have been holidaying in Spain for upwards of 40 years, the overwhelming number of those trips have been to the Costa del Sol. We started out at Torremolinos because its very close indeed to Malaga Airport. That was when we encountered those "intellectuals" who wore union jack shorts and thought that drinking 10 pints of San Miguel with breakfast was required.

We have gradually moved our holiday destinations further and further west to escape even the potential of association with these charming people. For probably the last 20 years, we have headed straight down the coast to either Manilva or Estepona. What we call "the posh end of the costa." It's an absolute doddle of a journey using the toll road and its worth every single cent.

it was during these holidays that we fell in love with Spain and discovered how warm, charming and friendly the Spaniards are towards people who display simple good manners and even more so when any attempt is made to speak Spanish. Therefore, I could say that it would make our lives easier if we get to speak Spanish, and that would be true. However, for me it's a matter of respect for the people who we will encounter in our new home. Sounds a bit soapy, I know, but I genuinely mean every word.

The best way to improve your language skills whilst learning the basics is to have regular intercambios with native Spanish speakers who are keen to practice their English.

Reading books and using apps are good building blocks to learning a language but they can only take you so far.

Couldn't agree more. My recent holiday in Spain supports every word you've said.

It was very gratifying to be able to speak whole sentences, and even more humbling to get so much help and advice from Spaniards.

My ambition too - I am mistaken for a Belgium in France which is an insult to French but a huge compliment for me being English - I read Donkey Hootee (how I pronounce it!) and decided he was completely bonkers and deluded đŸ€ŁđŸ˜‚ but I might try it in Spanish later- I am at a basic level reading Juan Fernandez (1001reasons to learn Spanish) books! Share your interesting learnings please I am sure I am not the only person on this forum that would be hungry for them!

I agree SpanishDict is excellent and I am curious if I don’t know a word so use app often! I am quite competitive on Duolingo having discovered it 28 days ago....these free learning apps are excellent! I get a bit bored on babble app....I learn by ear not text books. My most fun free YouTube teacher is Juan and 1001 reasons to learn Spanish - Es muy divertido! Poco poco cada día....

Champ - another resource;

Lightspeed Spanish, free podcasts, downloadable in any smartphone.

The lecturer is Gordon Brown and it is quite interesting hearing him transition from English with a Geordie accent to Spanish without the Geordie accent (Spanish not lending itself to the Geordie word formation)

His wife is a native Madrilenian, Cynthia. They have produced around 120 lessons so far, 30 each of basic, intermediate, advanced intermediate and advanced covering all segments of Spanish life.  The advanced intermediate and Advanced podcasts are of course delivered mainly in Spanish, but at a pace and with pronunciation that is understandable and useful to practice your Spanish listening skills
