The following is copied directly from the N332 (Guardia Civil run) page

N332 Section - CAR REGISTRATIONS SPAIN 🇪🇸 🇬🇧

- THE ITV IMPORT TEST (part1/2)

Most ITV stations here in Spain require an advance visit to request an ITV import test, but there are some exceptions, particularly in the Murcia region. Whilst it may seem strange to have to wait several days or even a week or more for an ITV import test, this time is used by the ITV Engineer or Technical Director to study the paperwork and photos of the vehicle to ensure everything is in order.

Some ITV stations limit the number of daily import tests they conduct and some ITV stations share an engineer or technical director which can also lead to a longer waiting time for your test and in some instances there can be delays of 4 to 5 weeks or more.

Due to the excellent working relationship we have with our preferred ITV Stations we are able to offer multiple clients a same day headlight realignment service and import test. More often than not we can have the registration process complete and new Spanish plates on your car before other ITV stations can schedule an appointment.

COST

The cost of the import test can also vary depending on the type of vehicle, the province where the ITV station is located, whether it's an EU registered vehicle or non EU registered (which are usually more expensive) and whether it's an import test being conducted as part of a change of residency. Typically the cost range is from 95 to 155 euros.

PREPARATION

Obviously it's important to ensure that your vehicle is in good working order and a pre import check from a local workshop or vehicle import company is always advisable. We've covered the main points for your vehicle in our previous article:

PREPARING YOUR VEHICLE FOR THE SPANISH ITV IMPORT TEST;

https://www.facebook.com/338772616310097/posts/2165966930257314

REQUIREMENTS

Each ITV station has it's own set of requirements for paperwork that can also lead to frustration for the DIY importer. For example some ITV stations will insist that a non EU vehicle clears customs before they will even test it, meaning that you will be financially committed to the import without knowing whether your vehicle will pass the import test or worse, whether it can actually be imported. For this and many other reasons we'd always recommend that you speak to an experienced vehicle import company in the first instance.

- THE ITV IMPORT TEST (part 2/2)

Following on from last week's article, this week we set out what personal documentation and vehicle paperwork you will need to present to the ITV station if you intend to take your vehicle to the import test yourself.

VEHICLE DOCUMENTATION

The documentation you will need to provide will depend on the type of test being conducted, but the original vehicle registration documentation is always required. Along with this you will usually also require either a European Certificate of Conformity or a Ficha Técnica Reducida which will need to be ordered in advance, although most import companies will take care of this for you automatically, based on the specifics of your import.

PERSONAL DOCUMENTATION

For personal documentation you’ll need to take photo ID such as passport and a copy of your NIE Certificate or Residency Card, unless you’ve got a TIE or DNI card which can be used on it’s own for this purpose. Some ITV stations will also ask you for proof of address such as a padrón certificate, house deeds or rental contract.

CHANGE OF RESIDENCY

If you are importing your vehicle as part of a change of residency you will have to provide the test station with proof of your Spanish Residency and also proof that you are no longer living in your previous country of residence. For most Europeans this is usually with a document called a Baja Consular, but for ex UK residents this document isn't available and you will have to show other proof such as a letter from HMRC, proof of pension paid into a Spanish bank account or similar.

ADVANTAGES OF USING A MANAGED SERVICE

Whilst the attraction of importing the vehicle yourself may appeal to some people, the complications, language barrier and having to deal with various Spanish government agencies, including Spanish customs authorities can prove daunting for most.

As outlined in our previous article there can be lengthy delays with some local ITV Stations and this is where our same day headlight realignment and testing service can really benefit our customers. In many cases we can have your headlights realigned, your car passed through the import test and registered onto Spanish plates before appointments can be made at other ITV stations.

This is of particular benefit if you are close to the time limits in which you are required to import your car, or if you are only here for a week or two on holiday or your UK or foreign MOT is about to run out.

I can thoroughly recommend the service from Car Registrations Spain who will give you a no-obligation quote for your vehicle, the cost of which will depend upon your specific CO2 etc.

Very fast efficient service which you know has been done properly. One trip to to their garage at Los Alcázares where any headlight adjustments required are done at the same time as the ITV, then the plates take 10-14days to be posted to you (I took my car Monday this week & just waiting on mine).
