Before Brexit.  £ vs € =1.35. €1350 for every £1000

Today approx  £ vs € =1.09. €1090 for every £1000

A difference of €260 for ever £1000

Approx 20%

These are ‘facts’ as a result of Brexit.

What was it you 'won'? Your country stopped its own citizens retaining free movement in Europe. Was that a 'win'?

Chris

You are questioning that we have lost free movement? You did not get the memo then, from Priti Patel, announcing this. Just a few weeks ago.

Free Movement does not mean stopping you going on holiday to Spain or Germany or France. It means the right to find work, to live, and to travel freely across all EU countries for as long as you wish - as long as you are not a drain on the resources of the country you live in. That right - especially the right to work across frontiers that many freelance Brits have enjoyed for decades - has gone. And for tourists? It means those that reside in the UK but have a holiday home here cannot after 1st January come and stay for more than 90 days at a time.

The citizens of Spain, Germany, France etc ALL retain their free movement rights across the EU27.

Good 'win' that.

Unless of course you register your stay; which pre-Brexit most from Britain could do, but post transition period will be an option open only to the very wealthy.

But why should you care about that - you’ve got .... sorry, what exactly IS it you’ve gained again?

Doris,

While your numbers are correct the use of the word 'lose' is slightly disingenuous.

10 years ago the £ / € rate was 1.1. Today as you say it is 1.09.

I would suggest that 1.1 is probably a reflection of true values. In which case the peak at 1.4 could be viewed as a gain not a loss.

At the beginning of 2016 the U.K. was doing very well in most aspects and this was reflected in the pound hovering around the 1.4 mark. After Brexit the pound initially dropped to around 1.15 Overnight as a direct result of the vote. Knee jerk Reaction you might say. In the weeks and months that followed it declined further when the realisation of the situation sank in with people. The value of the pound will not increase until the uncertainty of ‘deal’ or not deal’ is removed, something which this government seems incapable of.

Unfortunately that’s what money markets do. To rely on money markets for income is folly.
i have no argument with what you say except you have not lost €260 - you have in fact had the benefit of the pound’s increased value against the Euro since 2010. From 2010 to 2016 you had a bonus. Do not now complain you have lost.

If you think the Pound was always going to increase in value ( Brexit or no Brexit ) you are deluding yourself and don’t understand what drives exchange rate. Going to any country as either resident or visitor leaves you open to currency fluctuation. You cannot become a resident in the country of your desire and then complain that the country you denounced made a decision that affected your income via the money market.

Work on the basis the pound is actually worth 1.1 euro ( which it historically is ) and you won’t be disappointed.

I fully understand the workings of the foreign exchange markets, and yes I do realise that rates change daily. What I am saying as an indisputable ‘fact’ is that the pound Fell violently as a direct response to the referendum result. Do you dispute this?
