I recently moved here to Spain and I have not began work yet and I also do not have private health insurance. I discovered I am pregnant and I’m not really sure how to go about getting the proper medical care as I am too late for private health insurance and I have to work for at least 190 days before I can avail of the Spanish health care, could anyone advise me please?

As an EU member you should 'theoretically' be covered by your 'homecountry' medical card . Best suggestion I have is to call you embassy or consulate, who will give you all the correct answers.

You don’t have to be working for 190 days to be covered - I was covered from the first day I was Autónomo

However, without medical cover, you won’t get residencia, which you are obliged to take if you intend to remain longer than 90 days.

I can only suggest trying some of the medical insurance companies to see if they will take you

Hi thank you so much for the information. If I begin work I am covered under Spanish healthcare from then? Also do I need the nie to avail of this? Could you tell me more on residencia? Thank you

If you intend to remain in Spain for longer than 90 days, you are obliged to register for residencia.

For this you need to prove either an amount equivalent to 12 months IPREM available to you, which in 2023 is 7.200€ (source https://www.iprem.com.es/2023.html) or a contract of employment.

You also need proof of health cover, either private health, or again a contract of employment indicating Autónomo is being paid by your employer, or proof of your status as self-employed, again showing autónomo is being paid by you)

You will also need a Padrón less than 3 months old.  This is what you will get when you take a lease on an apartment of more than 6 months now I believe it is and you go to the Ayuntamiento to register on the padrón - the register of people living on the ayuntamiento’s local area.  The Padrón identifies that this is now your place of normal residence, and that you are not a tourist.

When you register for residencia, you will be allocated a NIE at that point.there is no need to apply for it separately; this is your identification number in Spain and will be used for any financial transaction.

You will be able to get a job, open a bank account etc etc with your passport or country of origins ID card (if you come from an EU country that issues one), but should advise banks etc when you obtain Residencia so you can swap to NIE.

I would honestly advise getting a gestor to assist you as the bureaucratic process - in particular dealing with Seguridad Social can be a bit … well, bureaucratic!!
