you will have to have private cover unless you are working in the Spanish system and contributing into the coffers. You will not be able to get residencia without medical cover and sufficient income to live on.

With regards income, you need to be able to prove an annual average balance in a bank account, by means of certificate in Spanish of 9.050€ if a single person, or 5.300€ per person applying if a couple - this is good up to December. There has been much conversation about whether it’s income or average balance in Andalucia; I live in Vera and proved my financial means by average balance.
If you are working, I don’t believe there is a minimum amount required, as my wife obtained Residencia ahead of me and proved financial means by payment of autónomo and by being registered as a self-employed yoga teacher.
Healthcare is necessary to obtain Residencia and is achieved one of three ways:
1) by taking out private health cover
2) by being of pensionable age and supplying S1 form from DWP
3) by payment of autónomo (Spanish equivalent of National Insurance) either through employment on contract or by being self-employed.
After 1 years legal residence in Spain, if you cannot afford health cover and do not qualify as a pensioner, you can apply to go on Convenio Especial, however to have one years legal residence .... you must first have Residencia

I BELIEVE Banco Santander offer health insurance, but I have no direct knowledge of that. The only other person I know, trust an would recommend is Maxine Morgan of Maxine Morgan Insurance (underwritten by Liberty Seguros), Las Buganvillas Roundabout.
