Hi. I have a friend who is using an old desktop PC running Windows 7. It's broken down and to cut a long story short, I need a donor PC to substitute components in order to repair it for him. He's really stuck at the moment for email/internet use.

I can do all the restore/repair work on it for him. I just need parts of the right era for this 12-year old PC. As long as it’s sata, it can be much younger.

If you have an old PC like this gathering dust, I'd be very grateful for the help we can give to him with this repair work.

All that's needed is the main sata era CPU box (tower), NOT keyboard, monitor etc. If you have an older Win7/Win8 PC like this gathering dust, I'd be very grateful for the help we can give to him with this repair work.

Cheers.

YES!! I have such a beast gathering dust in my upstairs storeroom and you would be most welcome to it and whatever other expansion cards are there with it - it’s been there for about 4 years now, like I say, gathering dust.  You want it, it’s yours.

As I have just bitten the bullet and upgraded to W10, I also have Windows 8.1 install disks and a spare 8.1 licence you are most welcome to

Just as an FYI if your going to use win 7 or 8 remember that it is no longer supported by Microsoft and if  you have no other option you can-

Pay for Extended Security Updates

Rememebnr not to use use Internet Explorer on a Windows 7 PC

Install reliable antivirus aoftware

 Visit Windows update

Back up your data through the 3-2-1 Rule

sorry if this seems redundant

Yes – points taken there. But sometimes it’s ‘needs must’.

Unfortunately a lot of people are 1) very used to the older style software that still works well, and 2) really cannot afford to keep throwing money at the big corporations forever.

This world has fallen into the trap of worshipping Mammon.

I think, with the cost of living crisis now firmly in place, a lot more consumers are going to have to make tough decisions. It’s interesting for example, how Spanish TV advertising varies so much from UK TV advertising.

As an aside, talking of backup, you’ll note Google Drive stopped support for anything other than Windows 10 and up and that the Google Drive app stopped working on older computers.

As I do a lot of work between three different computers, I needed reliable storage / cloud services.  I can definitely recommend PCloud if anyone is looking - I swapped to it and it works with Windows 7 / 8 / 10 / 11.  It’s also much more stable than Google Drive, presents your folders as a Network Drive (unlike Google Drive that shows them as links), offers a secure encryption option in which only the holder of a private key can access and many other worthwhile benefits

Good idea but is that not a bit pricey a portable drive or USB stick would be a bit cheaper.

Not that pricey, no. I paid 300€ for a lifetime storage of 2TB.  I have a lot of stuff I store ….

Ok I can see why you use the service but I think Oldsolider wants to keep costs down and personally if his friend has 2TB he needs stored he will need an new machine just to index all that stuff. Windows 7 can not read any drive over 500GB.unless he can update his BIOS to reconize a HDD over 500GB.

From what I gather that may not be possible as the BIOS may not be avaialbe any longer.
