I assume you are driving down as we did in July 18 years ago with our dog, it's a stressful journey for a dog and more so in July /August, we were coming to live and of course our much loved pup came with us, but for a 13 year old the journey down then two weeks or so in a apartment followed by the return journey could indeed result in you needing a vet, which won't be good for your dog and of course will spoil your holiday, have you a relative or friend you can leave him with if you don't like kennels.  he/she looks a lovely little thing and would miss you and you him/her but may be the best option.

I agree with Ray. You appear to be a genuine kind to dogs person. If you must bring your dog during the heat of summer just be aware of the heat of the outside ground and temperatures.

I am moving to Spain permanently so this will be a one way trip.

We have travelled with our two dogs, a Bichon and a Westie. We have AC in car and appartment  but also bought a coat which you put on them damp to hel keep them cool which is very effective. never take them out in the heat of the day, early morning and evenings.

Your dog will be fine as long as you take precautions in the heat.

  • Avoid long walks between 10am and 6pm,
  • Use a chill coat if he starts panting a lot
  • Keep him out of direct sun on any terrace or patio: he’ll soon get to know the phrase: ‘stay in the shade!’
  • Supply plenty of water, as ever
  • Check his paws regularly
  • Our dog in addition to a chill coat for 1 hour periods if he’s feeling warm has the option to use a chill mat on the floor, especially useful during warm nights.
Good luck with the move. Enjoy!

I thought you were driving down for a holiday, Bertie will be fine as ours was and you have good advice from other posts, good luck and I wish you every happiness in your new home.

Thank you. Not the best time to drive down and may make the move in September.

Thanks for your help.

Thanks Chris for the helpful tips.

Thank you all. Bertie has been to Andalusia several times but not in the summer. Will probably drive down in September.
