As far as I am aware, yes, once you gain permanent residency you become eligible to go on health system.

The retirement / S1 only comes into play for your first five years here - after that, as a permanent resident, you qualify for Spanish Health

Thank you Dario

Good Morning, a little bit of advice please. My husband and I are here renting for 3 months, to look at properties, and different areas, with a view to applying for a NLV. We have found the cost of living to be quite expensive and not much cheaper than the UK so far. Do you agree this is the case...

...?
Also could someone give me an idea of the monthly cost of private medical I am 60 and my husband 62 and he takes medication for high blood pressure.

Many thanks

You are right....Supermarket fruit and veg is a lot more expensive than the UK. Always makes me laugh that produce grown here is dearer than in UK.... Asda in UK is  £3 for 2 boxes of grapes..... Here is the same price for one...LOL. markets are best.....

Hi,

Try applying for an S1 form from Uk and register it in Spain.  Medical is then free as its coveeed by NHS.

While doing that apply for a ehic card and take it to your spanish health centre.  They should give you a temp SIP card so you can get your prescriptions.

Hi there,

My private medical ins is with ASSSA. It costs 1300 per year. This does not cover pre existing illness such as diabetes ect. We pay approx 40 euro for car tax per year, car insurance costs approx 450 per year fully comprehensive. Electric can be expensive and is one of the reasons we've had solar panels installed. The British shops are quiet expensive even Spanish ones that stock British products. So we don't use them.

We eat out occasionally but prefer cooking at home as we find getting vegetarian dishes can be tricky in most places. Spain takes getting used to food culture ect, as someone else mentioned the weather is one of the biggest reasons we came here, getting old is not fun, aches pains ect, and Irish weather does not help.

Yes being vegetarian is not easy in Spain..... we have been veggies for 50 years, so it makes us smile when people think it is a fad! So often we are handed the fish menu... and I try to explain that we are not pescatarians and fish has blood in it! LOL.  The worst thing is vegetarian wines..... but it is easy now to get in Consum, and most of the places we eat allow us to take our own.  As the say..." you get off the plane in Spain into the sunshine and back 30 years.... but we love it and would never return to the YUK.
