Hi,

We are having no response from the DVLA after leaving numerous messages on the phone number given for outside the UK.

Would it be better to send in a postal application as we do have a family address in England?

Thanks

Yes - definitely.  Make sure you send it registered Mail and be aware that due to … a certain slowness … on the English side, it may take a while to get there.

I posted a letter to pensions.  It’s tracked as having left Spain but neither Correos nor Royal Mail tracking show it as having been accepted / arrived in UK.  And yes, Royal Mail tracking does work with the number.

I BELIEVE there are Expat services that can expedite mail to UK but I just don’t know who they - or where they are.

Anybody else here can advise on the service that does rapid mail to UK?

That would definitely be the easiest way, although it’ll take around 4 weeks to get a UK licence.  If you’ve only been in Canada 12 years, did you have previous British licenses? If so you don’t need to swap - simply ask for Brit licence to be reissued - although you will need a UK add...

i Can attest to the efficacy of this, as I am close to someone that came over with an Australian licence which is not transferable in Spain.  As this person had a UK Passport, they swapped the Aussie licence for a UK one, then on receipt swapped the UK one for a Spanish one

Hi,  I’m Australian and exchanged my Australian drivers licence for a U.K. one 20 years ago when I moved here.  I’m moving to Spain later this year (Irish passport) and was advised that I can’t exchanged the U.K. licence for a  Spanish one because I originally obtained it in Australia and there is no  agreement between Spain and Australia and would need to do a theory and driving tests.  So, hopefully this isn’t the case.  😄

Definitely not the case - you DEFINITELY can exchange your UK licence for Spanish as the UK licence doesn't give any indication of where licence was first obtained.  I know this for a fact because I know someone who did the exact same thing in 2018 (Aus licence exchanged for UK then UK licence almost immediately exchanged for Spanish)

Thanks for your reply.  Unfortunately, it does state on the back beside each category 70 AUS. Which means exchange of licence.  Fingers crossed. I’ll give it a try and see what happens.

You can but try - you’re exchanging a UK licence, so it should be irrelevant where it was obtained.  Like I say, I know someone who did it in 2018

I hope so. I’ll let you know once I’ve tried.  Thanks for your help.
