Thanks Ian that is good info. Yes British.  So do you think, ( how long string lol) we would be in Schengen area automatically then.  ?

L181SKY - UK currently NOT in Schengen zone , and highly unlikely it will be in the future.

"If" you have residency in Spain you can stay 12 months or less as you choose ( the "as you choose" appears to have some limits potentially up to 6 months when on a temporary and longer when permanent resident ) so you are good to stay in Spain - because you have residency,  time in Spain does NOT count against Schengen time limits - but , if you leave Spain and go say to France you would now be in a Schengen country and the time allowance applies so if you spent say 2 months in France and then went to say Holland for another 2 months you would have overstayed your Schengen time allowance. I would postulate that if you drive - no one knows as no passport record made and you can slip back into Spain at the end of 4 months, BUT if you were flying I think you would have problems.

There is "hope" that Brits might get a special deal that would allow free movement of a sort within EU or Schengen - but that is pie in the sky right now !

Taxes - whole different situation , and yes it is possible to be resident on paper in more than one country ( I am currently ) :~)

Respectfully I disagree - if you are a non eu citizen and have residency in an EU country then you can reside in that country , BUT , when you leave that country to visit other countries in the EU you are time limited according to your non eu nationality. For most that results in 90 days in 180 rolling.

I mentioned there are no land borders in the example I quoted previously , consequently no checks as you move between these countries - so no record which likely means you can get away with it.

Just because there is no check taking place does not make it legal !

As I deal with this for family - here is a direct quote from the Dutch immigration authority in response to this exact question. A non EU citizen with a residence permit in an EU country. Rules are same across all EU.

"With your Dutch residence permit you may stay in all Schengen countries up to 90 days in any 180 day period without a visa."

We Brits are about to become non eu citizens - whole new rules will apply unless a miracle happens.

:-(

Ehic, 111 is for use in an emergency, it's nothing else, as has been said once you obtain residencia it no longer applies since you are then a Spanish resident and have to either get private medical insurance if under pensionable age or get youre Spanish medical card if you are, you can register with a local doctors surgery or even youre local hospital, you need to apply/obtain a Spanish driving licence and give up youre UK one within 6 months of obtaining Residencia.

People as quoted who have been living in Spain for years and years without getting Residencia have simply been flying under the radar and havent needed any medical treatment. They are now all coming under the net and having to get Residencia.

You need to first be registered on Padrón, have Certificado de Empadronimiento from Ayuntamiento, then with EX18 correctly completed, proof of income, proof of health cover and proof of payment of gastos, make an appointment with Oficina de Extranjeria in Almería.  There are no police stations around here that can do Residencia, so need to go to Almería.

Unless you are at least conversational in Spanish and truly understand Spanish bureaucracy, do not attempt this by yourself.  Retain a gestor / asesor / abogado to help you through the process - I promise it will cost you less in the long run.
