Hi Dawn
We have had an apartment in Palomares for the last 12 years and regularly go back and forth to it. If you want advice on the kind of questions you should be asking, let me know. If you eventually want to buy a car in Spain, again I can fill you in.
Palomares is a great place for walking and again, I can give you some routes to take, if you wish. However, there is an official walking club, that incorporates walks all over the Palomares catchment areas ( such as Villaricos, Vera, Bedar, Tourre etc...). I think this club is called "Mojacar Walkers", but Google it for your satisfaction.
Very healthy place to live and really clean air. Masses of crops exported from Palomares, with tomat 🍅 probably numero uno seller. Indicates no radioactivity as nothing toxic to worry about. The only time we feel healthy and motivated to exercise, is when we spend a period of time out here.
As far as I'm aware, there is a fenced off area behind the main village where one of the bombs fell (as far as I'm aware it didn't explode). I believe the chemical, plutonium, has seeped deep into the soil. But, as I've mentioned, none of this has affected worldwide sales and I haven't seen anyone with 2 heads or a green looking person with split pants!!!! So, the environment is safe in my view and is hyped up unnecessarily in the media.
Garrucha is 10 minutes drive,,,Mojacar centre, no more than 20 minutes.
Gyms in both Mojacar and Garrucha. Zumba, for sure, in Mojacar.
Nice square in Palomares with community centre. Community centre does Spanish lessons and fitness programmes. Couldn't expand on that.
If you like a steak, try the Dolce Casa restaurant opposite the square in a side turning. If you want a nice, friendly English pub, The Oasis just before the square is highly recommended.
Running out of steam now Dawn, so get in touch if you wish.
Best wishes
DAve.
