Buying a car

We ( German couple between 60 and 67) are owners of a house in Palomares, but currently still live in the Netherlands.

Due to the high prices for rental cars (we come every year for about 2 weeks in spring, 4-5 weeks in summer, about 2 weeks in autumn and sometimes for 2 weeks in winter) we have decided that we want to buy a car in Spain. The car will be parked at Alicante airport while we are away - we have already found a good offer here.

Can anyone advise me:

1. can I buy a car in Spain as an EU citizen?

2. if I buy the car in Spain, how do I have to have it registered in my name?

If yes - what are the requirements for this?

3. can you recommend a car dealer near Palomares/Vera/Garrucha? We are looking for a small car or micro car - 2000€ to 6000€!

I came to the same conclusion and bought a car in the summer. You need to have an address, rented or owned that the car will be registered too.

A lot of people will warn you off buying privately due to the way the laws work in Spain and if you don't do the transfer right, you could end up with someone else's debts and traffic tickets. I bought privately from people I was sure I could trust and used a gestoria to make sure all the I's were dotted and T's crossed. It was all done correctly and I now have all the paperwork in my name.

A reputable garage will do all that for you.

I was shocked at the price of used cars in Spain.

I use AA parking for an annual contract, pick up and drop off as much as you like. Excellent service I must say.

Hi, I bought a Smart car secondhand from the Mercedes’ garage where I also bought a brand new car. The garage did everything for me, all I needed was my address proof, my passport and the insurance details. All the best. Tbh, you might want to consider a new car here, second hand cars are ridiculous prices. It may be cheaper in the long run and in real terms. Cheers.
