Good Morning.

Unfortunately my dad has been diagnosed with throat cancer (right tonsil). He is due to start radiotherapy on Monday at Torrecardenas hospital and I'm trying to prepare him. Our translator is fab but I cant go into appointments and my dad is quite weak and overwhelmed and not asking the questions I would ask so I feel like we are going in a bit blind. If anybody has had radiotherapy in Spain I would appreciate any advice or heads up on side effects etc. We have him on nutritional supplements and soft diet but hes still losing weight, any tips? Also the translator says his appointments are once every 3 weeks? Everything I've seen on google says it's done 5/7 days a week for multiple weeks? Also how long are each appointment or is that a how long is a piece of string question! Just any info for what to expect would be great.

Sorry for the miserable topic on this beautiful day!

TIA

Anna

Hi Anna, sorry to hear about your dad, try sending a PM to Alicia on this forum, she has been thru a similar thing and might be able to offer some advice.

Hi Anna,

Firstly I'd like to say how sorry we are to hear you news, I'm sure you dad will be very worried.

My husband had throat cancer just over twenty years ago.  He had radiotherapy in the UK.  It was intensive, most days over weeks not months.  He had a mask made first, and target markings put on the mask to pinpoint with accuracy where the beams should hit.

In my husband's case, he was then cancer free for another six years.  During the treatment he only wanted soft food.  For calories and to help him keep on some weight he ate a lot of creamy rice and ice cream and cakes.  Non of which he would normally eat.  He also had slightly sore skin.  It is of course burnt.  Best to stay in the shade.  Sucking sweets and mints helps with saliva production.

My husband went on to have a laryngectomy fifteen years ago, and has been cancer free since.

I hope the information helps, we wish your dad well.

Thank you. This does help. I will stock up on ice cream and fatty puddings for him. I will also get him some sunblock and keep him in the shade.

I'm glad your husband has been cancer free since his surgery, that is good to know.

Kind regards

Anna
