I believe, but not 100% sure, that once you have achieved residency that you are allowed up to 2 years outside the country to care for ageing relatives. So it may be best to get established first and deal with any problems as they develop.
Always check with a Spanish lawyer for the best way forward.

Good luck. Phil
It’s six months Phil. And two years once you have lived here permanently (five years). Now the Withdrawal Agreement is in place it becomes five years that you may be outside Spain after you have been living here five years.

OK John, I bow to your experience. I am only quoting what the Withdrawal Agreement guidance says. That is current and the WA is a binding treaty.
Best wishes!
Chris
Thanks for all the help. Do know a good solicitor /gestor in the Vera/ Garrucha/ Mojacar area who can help us with residency /registering a car/ getting Spanish licence and a few other things no doubt! Andy
Grupo Salvador on Mojacar playa next to Macs are very good. Anna will tell you everything you need to provide, and they have an office in Almeria where they will arrange for someone to meet you and go with you if needed.

Thanks I’ll give them a call.

That is coming first hand from a person that as had to go throu the process
Hi John. The situation in Spain 🇪🇸 has changed. CAB Spain today confirmed that Spain recognises civil partnerships when obtaining residencia, whether for hetero or same sex couples:
“Yes Spain has recognised these for some years now. But they are not recognised in some regions for inheritance tax allowances.”
Best wishes

Andy,
We are an unmarried heterosexual couple with a 12 year old daughter and achieved residency for all 3 of us in October 2019 having relocated in September 2019.
All with the help of the wonderful Anna at Gestoria Salvador on Mojacar Playa and her colleagues in Almeria.
The only proviso was that we had to show independent financial holdings in excess of €17,000 for both myself AND my partner.
Luckily for us we had taken every piece of paperwork we possess to our residency interview in Almeria and could prove that we both qualified.
Good luck with your future plans,
Andy, Kate & Vicky
Fantastic - I’ll get in touch with them. Ps may I ask what you are doing with your daughter re schooling? One of (the many) reasons for coming to live in Spain for us is that son is mildly autistic and he cannot get one in school in the U.K. our plan is to home school with some private tutoring. Best regards
