We brought partners Honda Insight Hybrid down from Essex last January/February and had it matriculated, headlamps cost just short of €500 each !!, tax with it being a petrol electric hybrid is €30 for the year, the relative newness, ie under 10 years old means the ITV is valid for two years ! Surely if running a rhd vehicle here is a problem it would have been made plain at some stage.
I wouldnt think twice about going the same route again, to make a point, my next ideal vehicle will be a japanese import into the UK that is most likely rhd only and as above and below I'll drive it, get it matriculated and not worry one bit.
Dont understand horror stories about the Guardia hating rhd vehicles, we live in Urcal and are in and out of Huercal Overa, up and down the A7/E15 doing airport trips, Murcia, Lorca, Albox etc etc doing shopping trips market days etc, all where there is a police presence, all on a regular basis, the ITV and ECO stickers are plain to see, we/I drive safely and sensibly, tho two friends have fallen foul of the local unmarked cars here and there by crossing solid white lines and attracting on the spot fines.
There have been random spot check stops, school crossing stops etc all with Guardia and policia local presence without us being stopped. The biggest issue might be when to get a Spanish driving licence, currently as we understand it we have up to two years from gainjng Residencia, and that's info garnered from a .gov website.
Granted, buying a lhd vehicle in the UK to bring and drive in Spain would seem to make sense but whichever way one goes and does it it would seem part exchanging your vehicle in the UK might save some money, but you'll still have to get any vehicle matriculated just to get the correct windscreen sticker and ITV/MOT. Irrespective of how long a UK mot is valid for and you'll still need valid Spanish road tax if any newly purchased vehicle is on Spanish plates or not. The Guardia and policia local both have links to/with the DVLA and use NPR just as much here as in the UK.
As I understand it, taking a UK rhd vehicle back to the UK you'd have the reverse problems if it's been matriculated, ie road legal in Spain, headlights, road tax, MOT etc and only have 3 months to get everything changed.
Please do correct me if I'm wrong.
As for driving standards and safety on Spanish roads, given that seemingly most of the Spanish drivers both male and female, young and old dont know what indicators are for nor how to use them, being wary of speedsters especially on motorways day and nite, and using mirrors probably more here than in the UK is a definite given be your vehicle rhd or lhd.
I have extra mirrors, the convex kind on partners Honda that help with vehicle proximity on our left side, a speeding car in that kind of blind spot situation is just as difficult to spot in either type of vehicle. It's a matter of being visually very aware.
