They don't take credit cards so you will need to have cash to pay them on arrival but it does mean they don't block off money off your card (a nasty American practice that I detest).

We did the same as you are planning to do when we came over last year.

A word of advice, you will not be able to register a car until you have an NIE number which took us 4 weeks to obtain meaning we had to hire a car for that period. I would advise that you start the NIE process before you leave the UK to limit the amount of time using a hire car. Try to get in a position where you fly into Almeria airport from the UK and get a pre-arranged appointment at the NIE office in Almeria. This will save you time and at lease 1 journey to and from the NIE office in Almeria.
