I was told that a UK sim can only be used in Europe for 4 months after which the UK mobile company has the right to turn you off until you return to the UK. Having said that my O2 sim worked for six months on pay as you go without any problems

If you don't tell them that you moved but have an autodebit on your account you will have no problem. Of course if you lost the card or broken it, that's another thing.

I am doiing such since 4 years know with my BE sim card.

Much depends on your UK provider.  My UK phone is with Virgin and they continue to let me "Roam Like Home" on my pay monthly UK contract as long as I don't exceed their "fair use policy."  They haven't stopped me yet, although I do tend to be back in the UK roughly once every three to four months or so.  Wife is with GiffGaff, and I think she is allowed max 2 months away, and is then routinely blocked until she returns to the UK and becomes unblocked again.

We picked up a cheap Spanish SIM from Llamaya and put it into an old phone mainly, as others have said, to enable messaging from banks, tradesmen etc, which works fine.  I am tempted to look at a dual SIM phone next.  

Hi i have my mobile phone on a uk contract with sky i brought a pay as you go mobile in Spain on orange i use this to make all my Spanish calls and use my uk contract to call my family and friends in the uk also messenger whats app works brilliantly for me i pay my sky bill by direct debit. 

Hi, I use a Spanish Orange pay as you go SIM and top up every year either in Spain or the UK as needed. This number is the one I give to the bank etc.. in Spain. My 3 UK contract phone is used for mobile data at very good speeds at my home in Mojacar when there and the UK. Also my Virgin UK contract SIM works fine. A dual SIM phone is handy..
