Hi Colin,

Thanks for the info.

I did try Telitec for an ADSL line and they said that they didn't cover the area at the moment. However they said they will be laying down fibre optic cables in 12-18 months in Mojacar which gives up to 300mbps! Do you know if it's only Vodafone that does?

Do you have to pay a monthly line rental too as well as the internet or does it come as a package? The property has a phone line but we don't know if it's in use or working (we've just purchased the property)

Hi Karen - I did look at Wimax as that's who the previous owner was with but I have found some new customer competitive rates elswhere.

I think it will be between Next, GSF and Telplay - although all of these are 'wireless' not ADSL internet.

It's turning into a minefield and I actually understand the internet jargon - god help anyone who doesn't!

Gsf sell wimax internet too. Just make sure whoever you use supports streaming of uktv

Hi Bob and Sandra,

Thanks for the reply. I have emailed Telplay and am waiting for a response.

Yes companies will do various mbs but you could be paying for say, 25 mbs for 30 euros a month, but actually be only receiving 8 mbs so in turn overpaying. The speed they advertise and the speed you can achieve can vary massively in the UK and Spain.

We will be using internet for IPTV box no calls only TV - is this what you use it for too? The buffering you're friends experienced will be because their internet wasn't strong enough. You need a minimum of 40 ping (the lower the better) and 4mb download speed (constant) for the box to work.

Are you on Mojacar Playa? I wondered if you could test your broadband speed - http://beta.speedtest.net

This is free, simple and will give you the stats. I would do it myself but I'm in the UK at the moment!

Thanks for your time.

Thanks for info re speed of internet.I am with next and although signed up for 6mb upon checking I am only receiving 2.7mb thus making it impossible to get IPTV.Will check with them tomorrow to see what they can do about this.

Fibre optic cables came down our street (Mojacar Playa) a few weeks ago. Movistar offered me 50mb (or 300mb) within 7 working days. Guy called yesterday to install but some box missing. He said he will be back in about 2 weeks.

Hi guys just an update -

I have spent a long time investigating all of the potential companies and narrowed it down to Telplay and WiMax. Both have actual aerials installed on the roof and I wasn't sure if all internet companies did this. So I assumed aerial on roof = stronger signal so decided between the two companies. I must say I got my info via websites or by emailing the companies from the UK. I didn't have the chance to go instore.

I decided to stay with WiMax as the previous occupiers had a contract with them and it actually worked out cheaper than Telplay as even though Telplay were cheaper on the months we would have it switched on, they were more expensive on the months we would have it switched off. We are having a holiday package so it will be switched off more than on. For the holiday package with WiMax we had to pay 150 euros for the aerial which is now owned by us, its only 30x30cm on the roof and is a one off charge so we wont be paying this any other time than the 1st year.

The contractors came on the said day and were more than helpful. I had a friend who could speak Spanish and the guys even set the TV up for me and tidied some cables for a small extra cost.

The internet is working well and I will be testing the mbps speed very soon.

Now to set up the IPTV! I have a Kodi box which I will be taking a chance on working, however the old occupiers have left another IPTV box which works really well for 5 mins and then turns off. At the moment I am assuming this is because we dont have an IPTV paid for package which I've heard is about another 10 euros a month on top of internet costs. More to follow on this...

Regarding the fibre optic....hip hip hooray! Hopefully this shakes the internet up a bit in Mojacar as this hasn't been an easy job and I am quite technically minded!

I hope this helps, if anyone has any questions let me know, I would be happy to help

We've been having problems with our firestick but I did a shedload of updates yesterday and that seemed to cure things.

Wimax online the other day were showing miserable download speeds in the 5's !! where partner is paying around 42€ including IVA for 30 mbps, !!, hence programmes running very slow, buffering, stopping etc, come forward to today after emailing wimax and download speeds have jumped to almost 15, still somewhat short of what partner is suposed to get but its a start.

You can check broadband speeds by doing www.speedtest.net.

Suggest you take the 'box' , that the previous folk left, into GSF next to the Mediterrano restaurant on the player. They will be able to offer a range of packages to suit your needs.

Hi just an update -

The internet with WiMax works well and have no issues so far!

For english TV we purchased a Mag 254 box from GSF Communications next to Mojocar Estates on the seafront and entered a contract for 9.95 euros a month. This uses the internet to play the channels and is easy to use and set up, you just plug it in really.

SO far SO good....it works! :)

We hafe wimax online and partner pays for around 30mgb but we very rarely see 20 or so and has been as low/slow as 6 !, average altogether is around 16-18 which gives pretty steady tv, we have the same mag box, small and inobtrusive but its developed a propensity to turn itself on then off just as the last programme comes up and displays "bno signal" which necessitates having to play around with the on/off buttons.

System is also linked to a 1.8 metre dish and we have dish link and an Amazon firestick in one of the bedrooms which seems ok despite all the horror stories about kodi back in the UK.
